It’s all about streaming video online for many these days, and with YouTube being the primary outlet, this development is not much of a surprise.

“I’m happy to announce that on mobile alone YouTube now reaches more 18- to 49-year-olds than any network -- broadcast or cable,” she told a crowd of 2,700 gathered at the Javits Center in Manhattan. "In fact, we reach more 18- to 49-year-olds [in the U.S.] during prime time than the top 10 TV shows combined.” The finding, based on a Google-commissioned Nielsen study of 2015 viewing data, is significant as the 18-to-49 age group is the target audience that most advertisers seek to reach through TV. YouTube has seen gains in that audience, while TV’s hold on it is slipping. The loss has been especially pronounced among viewers under age 35, who are increasingly drawn to online video.

Youtube (Google) can quantify this because they are able to measure unique streams. Normal TV, through the Nielsen Ratings, is a purely speculative number.

That might be why Obama thinks it's real important to make sure companies like Google can start being allowed to make cable boxes, so we can get these meaningful statistics from a company that care about statistics and isn't trying to manipulate us like those mean cable companies.

There is one other tiny issue with this shift. Is that much of the content people are watching on Youtube was originally derived from a content provider such as those found on network and cable television. I suppose there could be a long term problem when the cable and network television providers go out of business and there is no one left to create the content being uploaded to Youtube. But honestly, I wouldn't worry about the details.

OTA tv is pure garbage now anyway besides news and sports nothing is really worth watching

Cable boxes are cookie for not allowing real competition in the actual service. Not sure wrapping up my 200 channels of crap in a Roku interface will change my life much.

It sure showed this week-end. I saw more commercials interrupting the YouTube videos I was watching.

Don't you hate when you get something completely out of left field too, like a beer commercial in Spanish. I do not watch or look at either beer related videos or spanish videos. Know your demgraphics!!!

That's been the trend ever since they launched YouTube Red. On the PC it's not so bad because adblockers still work but if you watch it on mobile devices, smart TVs or something like an Android TV device it is really annoying. I noticed that there are a lot more of the unskippable ads now too. I paid for YouTube Red because I was watching more and more videos on my TV because of the Shield TV. The Google Play Music subscription that comes along with it makes it not that bad of a deal either.

I rarely agree with Obama, but damn that is a good point. It actually opens up the freemarket, but, since cable companies are lining repulbicans pockets with cash, this will never happen as they'll block it. Which, is ironic, given how much republicans always talk about the open market.

I've fallen into the habit of checking my subscribed YouTube channels every day and am usually much more entertained than watching anything on TV.
The only thing my son watches is youtube for gaming videos, lets play, minecraft, Terriara, etc. The interesting thing is these are instructional videos that are entertaining also.

Same here. The only thing TV is good for is real-time news and weather now.

I also check my youtube channel 5 times a day also... oh my.. this thing is addictive...

Yeah, it don't surprise me. I can't watch a Youtube video anymore without having to sit through a fucking 45 second ad first. Not a problem on my desktop with AdBlock but it's a real pain in the ass on my smart phone. I've just about quit watching Youtube because of it. I dumped cable primarily because of the ads and it looks like I might have to do the same with Youtube and just watch nothing but Netflix. If they start that bullshit I guess I'll just have to start reading books........well I don't think I'll go that far, probably just masturbate more.

My YouTube to cable TV watching ratio is about 1000:1. Luckily my favorite hosts(?) only have 20-30k subscribers so they keep ads to a bare minimum.

We like to cast Youtube Game of Thrones episode reviews after watching said episodes (we dont have HBO) to the TV.

Nice to know. I see zero ads with Youtube Red.

I have YoutubeRed too. Replaced HTPC with a Nvidia ShieldTV. Sorta had forgotten ads were a thing. 1/2 got YoutubeRed to get rid of ads, 1/2 because money will sorta support the channels I watch, and 1/2 because you get google music subscription too.

Another benefit is that you can turn off the screen of mobile devices and the stream will still play. A lot of stuff on youtube is not worth watching because it is just some dude standing in front of a camera and talking. Being able to turn off the screen and just listen is a nice feature.
