I'm not sure why Google is resisting this so much, you and I both know that eventually this will become a Global thing with everyone wanting the right to be forgotten. I'm actually surprised more countries haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet.

Google complied, but it only scrubbed results across its European websites such as Google.de in Germany and Google.fr in France, arguing that to do otherwise would set a dangerous precedent on the territorial reach of national laws. In February it also started delisting results across all its domains - including Google.com - when accessed from the country where the request came from. "As a matter of both law and principle, we disagree with this demand," Kent Walker, Google's Senior Vice President and General Counsel, wrote in a blog post.

I think mandating what can and cannot be reported about people is a bad precedent for free speech.

It's been awhile since I read into these laws, but I think these are the ones where it's not about "oh hey, I want to not be listed in search results" but rather "oh hey, so and so put a negative review out, I'd like for that to be delisted".

Hence why they're resisting it.

Why should Google be responsible for content on OTHER PEOPLE'S WEBSITES?

That is the real problem with this.. They are being told what their search algorithms are allowed to find, they don't create or host the content..

If those people have a right to be forgotten, then they should go to the hosting site and have that info taken down.. you don't go to the search engine. It's punishing UPS for bringing a package with bad news, and not the person who put the news in the package.

I am not sure what body would enforce a worldwide ruling like this. Also, the French government controlling free speech in the USA would be just as much a violation of the 1st Amendment as the USA government doing it. If they French are so keen on establishing worldwide interpretations of laws, perhaps they could start extraditing criminals with USA warrants to the USA finally to show they put their money where their mouths are.

but spying and tracking everything people do, (like google does) is ok? what about the right to privacy for the people before the right to free speech for the corporations?

I really don't agree with the "right to be forgotten." I don't like the idea of not being able to find dirt on someone just because they don't want it found. What if I think whatever they did or were involved in should be remembered, and I don't appreciate laws like this trying to clean it away? I don't think it should be up to the person who a news story is about whether it can be searched or not...

This isn't about the "spying and tracking" or actually anything that Google, itself, does. IIRC, this is just forcing google to take down links in it's search engine that has info about the people who wants to be forgotten.

If the info is from spying, sure, I can agree. But it shouldn't be up to google to take off links to website. The info is still out there, but they just won't be listed in a search.
