HGST 6TB getting low reviews?

I'm in the market for a few 6TB drives and the recent amazon/newegg customer reviews of Hitachi's suggest a rash of DOA and premature failures lately. Is this a 'when manufactured' time of year thing? Bad sampling of user base? End of Hitachi's reliability dominance? If none of those, what's a reputable alternate vendor worth considering?

With HDDs I wonder how many failures are shipping damage. Packaging and or handling. As usual angry customers are the most likely to post..
