Pure speculation here.

Nvidia and amd X2 cards should have been out by now. Actually both were expected by christmas (nvidia was supposed to be out even earlier)

I know AMD postponed to match Oculus launch and probably nvidia is doing the same, but since both next gen architechtures are expected by Q2, Does it really make sense for them to release X2 cards on an older architechture?

no, they are timing the release with occulus, as you mentioned.

Most consumers do not buy based on architecture. Only those of us who keep up on this stuff care.

Yes, but potential X2 customers are the ones that care about that stuff.

If they wait until the Rift ships in March it would be pointless with Polaris so close to release.

Other than the 5 people that wanted quadfire there is no one particularly interested

They should get the 490/Fury II out the door ASAP instead. That's what I'm waiting on anyhow

My only argument for dual gpu setups like this would be for sff rigs for HMD. but talk about a niche market.

With each brands optimization for low latency, one gpu per eye rendering, that could be pretty attractive to demonstrators and retailers trying to push systems for VR gaming. But again, that seems like a relatively tiny market segment to hold out for.

My guess is by next generation they won't be doing dual gpu single board cards at all. With a 20% performance increase per generation(estimated), the top end cards will probably be able to drive 4k at 60fps, or 1080 at 120/144fps, so there isn't much need. Not to mention power consumption for those cards is huge.

"The product schedule for Fiji Gemini had initially been aligned with consumer HMD availability, which had been scheduled for Q4 2015 back in June. Due to some delays in overall VR ecosystem readiness, HMDs are now expected to be available to consumers by early Q2 2016," Dr. Su told French language website Hardware.fr. "To ensure the optimal VR experience, we're adjusting the Fiji Gemini launch schedule to better align with the market."

The Fury X2 is codenamed Gemini. Nvidia seems to be running a tight ship, because I can't find any good info on their dual-GPU card, or even if they are going to do one.

If the Fury X2 is pushed into the middle of the year, that pushes it perilously close to when they expect to release Polaris (mid-July to early September), to say nothing of when Nvidia is expected to release Pascal.

X2 cards are a hard purchase to justify without a killer app to go with it.

There's no 'Crysis' out now, or in the near future, so both AMD and Nvidia are just waiting for VR to take off before selling you a bigger boat. Or two.

Personally I think both companies are deliberately keeping quiet because I believe they aren't planning for a major 14/16nm GPU release this year, and will soften that blow with their X2 cards, thus using up the remaining 28nm GPU inventory.

So quiet that both companies have been talking about them a lot at CES and other events and making financial statements to investors expecting 2016 availability?

This is how these things go. You'll hear a lot more once they are ready for their release push. June if I had to pick a month.
