Anyone want to suggest an inside jack for wiring a cat 5e for uverse internet service?

I got lucky with my install as the tech was cool and had some extra items "fall off the truck" . But my parents haven't been having such good luck.. We have the cat5e cable, but upon looking at our lowes it wasn't clear as to which wall jack we should use to wire up the cable.. They had alot of the old school POTS boxs with the green, red, yellow, black wires in them...

Is this for the jack the modem plugs into? For my u-verse install earlier this year, the tech said he was required to put in a 'smart jack' for the wall jack -- kind of lame, because it's just hanging out in the air in my basement (i had terminated it to my patch panel earlier).

If I were wiring a jack into a wall in a room, I would just use a keystone rj11 jack -- or if you're feeling up for it, just do a rj45 jack, and make a rj45 <-> rj11 patch cable :)

I"m told that if they have to come inside at all, its an instant $99 install fee no matter what... Id prefer it if they came inside and did the jack, but its hard to find any actual install crap on att's site that doesn't assume you already have the jack installed...

Go take a pic of your demarc and post it.

Was this a self install or did a tech come out and put in the modem?

Phone service? If so it is U-verse phone or POTS?

What about U-verse TV service?

Either way I suggest a home run from the demarc to a standard rj-11 jack. You use one pair of wires, just like a regular phone line.

They haven't done anything to the NID yet, it will only be Uverse Internet.. No tv, no POTS

All that you need is one cat5e running from the nid to an rj-11 jack. The preferable place is somewhere near the center of the house or where any existing network system comes together.

If a tech is coming out to install it I would let him/her do it all. The only exception is if you have a finished basement and want the wire run a certain way. In that case I would pull the wire and let the tech terminate it.
