Google Wants To Use Algorithms To Censor The Internet For Hate Speech

so...is it orwell or huxley? 1984 - or brave new world?
So your argument is that there is never any middle ground, that any decision that goes one way or the other leads to something bad because we have no control over how far it goes? Isn't that a very emotional response, lacking logic and reasoning, like a baby crying because it dropped it's toy?

Thank you. I will admit I thought the entire Patriot Act was hot garbage, now it is being further twisted to erode even more basic rights but that is another topic entirely.

Seems like a good threat to continue on that topic! The people that voted yay on the Patriot Act should be jailed for treason against the American citizens. That includes GW

Oh, so we should jail the people who listened to their constituents and supported their views in the legislature. One group has the only take on how things should be and anyone against that needs to be locked up.

When Congress was debating the Patriot Act, and there were several lengthy debates, many people called their congressmen and told them what they thought of the bill. Congress voted the Patriot Act into Law and here is the voting results.
Passed the House on October 24, 2001 (Yeas: 357; Nays: 66)
Passed the Senate on October 25, 2001 (Yeas: 98; Nays: 1)

Now there were other people who had a hand in passing the Patriot Act, I know I did. I listened a little in the news, I heard that some privacy rights groups were concerned with it. I decided for myself that as long as the new law didn't change how we can change laws that aren't working out, that we would be ok and at that time, maybe we needed to loosen things up in order to put a crimp on these terrorists. And as a result, I did nothing. I didn't email my Congressmen, my representatives, or anyone else. I didn't join the debate or speak out against it. I cast my vote for the Patriot Act by not opposing it.

What about you?

I wrote my Congressman, had debates with friends and family, signed petitions, etc... Ive also continuously voted Libertarian since I was 18. Ive also done my best to have productive discussions on the scope of government that we are supposed to have(Republic) what the Constitution limits the government to, and many other things.
Trying to explain to people that you cant make decisions like this when you're scared is very difficult. The government wanted the power grab, and they got it because people were angry, scared, and full of hate.
The Patriot Act laid the groundwork for PRISM. The government is no different from children... You give them an inch, and they take a mile.

And your involvement matters. Even if things didn't do the way you believed it should. Too many people think that they don't matter.

Although I quoted you without knowing your more active involvement, my point was meant for the group. Being apathetic and uninvolved is just going along for the ride and it doesn't remove one's responsibility for how things turn out.

The Patriot Act didn't lay any groundwork for PRISM tho. PRISM is just a database of information that is collected from multiple sources. PRISM is not a collection program. It's where the data is fused together and made available to the subscribers.

It's the holding place, the clearing house, but it isn't anything that in and of itself is intrusive. It's just a necessary mechanism that analysts use to manage and make use of data.

As an example, the Meta-Data Program, was a collection program and the results of this program would provide data that would be feed into PRISM along with the product from many other programs. PRISM would have existed with or without the PATRIOT Act and there is nothing wrong with PRISM itself. But it's easy to understand how others could see it as harmful when data that should not have been collected is added to it.

What I dont like about this ( and I am sure people have said this already ) is who exactly decides what is "hate". I get jabbed at while I am work because I am Jewish... but you know what? I take ZERO offense to it. People have become whimpy, always trying to find an excuse to be offended. Gosh how did they function 20 years ago?

You might take offense to it if they hurt you or your family based on it. I agree it's a tricky thing to try and prevent, but unnecessary crying, fighting, and wars have been based on this simple premise. You can't expect everyone to be as emotionally stable, to "let it go", as many of us nowadays have been taught to do. Some are still taught that NOT fighting back over any little thing is a form of weakness or lack of pride.

Agreed. I should have been more clear... FISA

FISA has been around for over 35 years. Are you sure the Patriot Act really has anything big to do with FISA?

The United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC, also called the FISA Court) is a U.S. federal court established and authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (FISA) to oversee requests for surveillance warrants against foreign spies inside the United States by federal law

about 20 years ago I watched some PBS program called "Red in the face". I think it was mostly about White Supremacist groups in the US. I didn't see it all, but I do remember one part pretty clearly and I have never allowed myself to forget it.

The reporter is talking to this Manson looking psycho and the camera has a good closeup while this guy starts a slow, deliberate rant on who they see as enemies, and his list includes pretty much anyone who isn't "pure" white and even those who marry and have kids with non-pure whites.

This grabbed my attention see, my wife is Korean and my kids have a Korean mom.

The guy goes on, says they are watching all of us, tracking who we are, where we live and work, all that stuff. And what I came to realize very quickly was that even though I am used to having enemies, as a soldier they were enemies of the US. I have never really thought I had a personal enemy, someone who actually look at me at a very personal level, not just a uniform, and was really my enemy, my wife's enemy, and my kid's enemy.

From that day to this day, I have never forgotten this. To this very day I recognize and accept that these people are out there, here in the US, possibly even neighbors. I have no doubt hate exists.

Govt monitoring isn't the issue. Having an arbitrary entity as powerful as Google begin censoring the internet bothers me. I stopped utilizing Google products when they began stripping firearms sales from their Shopping algorithm. Doubt they miss me but it really opened my eyes to how difficult it is to use the internet or any media based products without utilizing google as a brand.

The group Anonymous is a false flag operation by the Government New World Order to curtail our internet freedoms, a false cyberwar which those in charge inforce new rules they say shows that whenever Anonymous makes an “attack” the US government they respond with new legislation.
