^ Try putting the gain the other way around for hiss (sounds like you have too much gain and a in-line volume control thats killing you noise-wise)

No, they make the hiss without being connected to anything. In a particularly quiet room, I can kind of hear it from my sitting position, too. But the odds are pretty low that both speakers are just faulty, so I'm going to guess it has to do with my home's grounding or something.
JBL has gone to shit recently, mostly thanks to Harman. Just a few months ago they fired one of the best speaker designers their company has ever seen. That guy designed many of their most legendary speaker systems, and was pretty much a legend himself. I guess his talents weren't needed for their new focus on bluetooth earbuds
