Weird issue with DSR in Fallout 4

Rig specs in sig. I've got DSR enabled for 3840x2160 and have the game settings set to use that resolution. If I fire up the game with my desktop at 1440p (my monitor's native resolution), the game comes up looking like this (resized from 3840x2160)...

DSRweirdness.png

The rendered area measures 1920x1440 pixels on the original image. Also, the mouse is visible throughout the whole screen and the game is detecting the pointer to be where it would be if the image filled the whole screen.

However, if I switch my desktop resolution to 3840x2160 before I launch the game, everything looks fine.

Weird, huh?

This is the first time I've seen an issue like that with DSR. I even fired up FNV at 3840x2160 to make sure it wasn't a driver issue or something and that worked fine.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Yeah, there are definitely bugs around DSR and how games interact with the higher resolutions vs desktop resolution.

Not to insult your intelligence but did u set up the screen res through Fallout4Launcher?

No insult taken, for sure. I tried setting it through the launcher, tried deleting all of the ini files and starting fresh, tried tweaking the ini files manually. Everything seems to be set correctly and it works great as long as I set the desktop resolution first. Just will not work with my desktop resolution set to 1440p.

I have the same issue with AMD VSR. It only works at 3200x1800 if I launch the game in fullscreen mode. Then the resolution shows up in the fallout4 launcher. Any other attempts with the ini file result in the exact same problem you are dealing with now. Fucking Bethesda.

Maybe try ENBoost's force borderless and force fullscreen borderless? Might work.

Make sure the game is running in full screen mode with
bFull Screen=1

I cannot run DSR through the launcher, only through the 2 Fallout4Prefs.ini files, I set them as read only after changing the following to the res values Windows made available :
iSize H=1323
iSize W=2351
to give DSR 1.5x @ 1080p.

When looking in the launcher after, it shows something like 1/4 of the res but works fine as long as they arent changed.
Saying this so others can have a go :)
The 2 Fallout4Prefs.ini files are in My Documents and the game installation.

Thanks Nenu I will def try that when I get home tomorrow.
Ill update this thread to let you all know if its working. Then we can just squash this DSR VSR not working BS.

np :)

Forgot to mention, I havent tested without setting the files to read only.
It probably will be fine if no changes are made after setting it up.

I assume the DSR/VSR mode must already be available in the video driver.
Mine already was so didnt check if it is necessary, makes sense though.

I will say its more than a little bit frustrating that a game that came out in 2015 is having an issue like this. I play older games with VSR resolutions just fine. I mean games that are almost decade old.

Great stuff, folks! I'd appreciate it if you could post in the fixes/workarounds thread so we can keep all these nuances in a single catch-all thread for everyone. I'm hoping that we can use that thread to point Bethesda to so they can address all sorts of issues going forward. Thanks!

I'll wait for confirmation it works with AMD and other NVidia users first.
It will avoid clutter.

Soon, I am almost done here at work. Trying to move an already racked up server for an ISP that wants 10Gig now.
Has not been the easiest thing since they want to keep IPs.
But by 9am I will be home and I can test your fix.

Anything I need to know if I am running 1920x1080 VSRed to 3200 x 1800?

Yes, you need SLI 290x :p
Just kidding,

When I had a 290x, I used 1.25x because the load was too high for anything higher with recent AAA releases to stick at the high end of 60fps.
But you may get away with higher in FO4 if you reduce Godrays.
Remember to turn all AA off other than TAA or FXAA.

I run it with everything no issue. It's lower fps than most prefer but I'm fine with single player games in the mid 30s to low 40s.
I can report it works for me BTW!

Nice one.
With the 980ti you get a smoothness slider on DSR that allows you to set how sharp/smooth the image is.
30% (the default) is no smoothing or sharpening.
I tried 100% smoothnes with no FXAA but there were a few too many crawlies.
Default smoothness with FXAA is better.
