Hi All: I've built a new rig a couple of months ago (see specs) Using an older Radeon 7870 from my previous build. It's time for an upgrade. I'm buying this 2K BenQ 32" monitor here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824014372&cm_re=benq_32-_-24-014-372-_-Product

I want to point out that I play a lot of turn-based & RTS strategy games. So there is FPS to consider here. Will the extra 8GB really help me @ 2560x1440?

NG is selling the MSI R390 for $279.99 right now AR. I've been partial to ATI/AMD cards for a long time. My last Nvdia 680 was from the AGP days.

I can go a little more to $350.00 But I usually have a max $300 rule for VC purchases.

Should I wait for BF deals?

Any & all insight would be appreciated.

My 290x struggles at 1440p with some games to max out. It depends on your acceptable level of eyecandy/fps. I can't get Witcher 3 to play at 60fps without serious quality degradations, most games play just fine though for 60FPS with most/all settings up.

I'd even consider finding a used 290x on the forums here before I'd s hell out a large premium for the 3x0 series.

Here's why charold's claim of going for the 290X vs dropping extra on the 390X is legit:: 290X vs. the 390X benchmarks. AMD has you paying extra $$$ for single % performance bumps across the board with their rebadge play.

Now, at this point, i would definitely wait to see what you can score with the BF deals. However, if you want a the best bang for your buck in the $300 range, your only real play is the GTX 970. It's faster than the 290/390 and on par with the 290x/390x but cheaper. I am seeing 390X boards easily $400+, which is ridiculous given their rebadge nature.

390X is par performance wise with the 980. 390X is also seeing higher clocks than the 290X.

At 1440 even Brent on here suggests a 290X/390X or 980. The 970 will struggle.

OP has a ~$300-350 max budget. 390X is $400 (on average), and the 980 $500+

970 or used 290X is OP's best play if he wants to keep in budget. BF may bring good deals on a 390X, though.

You guys are great. I really appreciate you chiming back. I can do $400.00 (50 YO without any kids) I usually just think $300.00 is the most I would like to pay. What about this MSI R390X for $389.99 AR $20.00 Should I just pull the trigger now? I haven't seen it much lower then it is right now.

Worthy? Or should I wait for BF?

The Asus Strix 390X is $389 on Amazon right now as well. Free prime shipping! :p

I'd pull the trigger. You start playing the waiting game you'll be waiting forever.

I wanted the Strix since it got an awesome review here on [H], but it wasn't on sale when I bought my Gigabyte.

I definitely agree with Budz that the waiting game is always there to play, but something rails at me at the thought of:

1) paying nearly $400 for a rebadge when the 'original' is only single FPS % digits slower and can be had for a little over half the cost

2) knowing that 1440P is still going to stress the card to the point that i know some games at the highest detail settings will chug

3) knowing that if i had saved a bit more, i could have tiered up and gotten a card i know would smoke 1440P in 99% of use cases.

OP, i really think you should be hunting for nothing short of a 980 or Fury grade card to do that monitor and 1440P justice. With BF coming around, i would be quite confident that you should be able to score a 980 or Fury card near $400.

Find me a new 290X for under $300.

Best I've found is $320. Might as well spend the extra little bit and get the 390X, more Ram and higher clocks.

Hydro: Thanks. I have Amazon Prime but here is Massachusetts we pay sales tax (6.25%) which brings it up to $414.36 Plus the length is really cutting it close for my Antec Three Hundred Two case (max VC 12.5") Also, I have an account with NG that gives me 6 months to pay (interest free) Over $1000.00 it's 12 months. I was thinking of scoring that BenQ 32" monitor & the VC @ the same time.

DO EEEET! :D

Loving my 390X with Qnix QX2710 2560x1440. Runs everything I play at max settings buttery smooth.

I spent weeks researching. It was the best bang for the buck in that price range.

APT1916: I think you're correct. I should @ least hold-off until BF. That BenQ monitor hasn't budged in price in 3+ months. Maybe I should go deep if I can score a very high-end video card for a good price. I build my rigs every 3 years, so maybe it's worth it in the end.

Hydro. Thanks man. I'll post back in the next 1-2 weeks & let people know what I decided on.

Guys...I found out today if I use my American Express CC with a $200.00 purchase with NG, I'll receive a $25.00 credit. That's puts the MSI R390X @ $368.98 which isn't a bad deal. I'm a tad worried that the R390X won't make a BF deal. Do you think I should bite?

I think that you will see some 300 series deals for sure..It's only ~10 days away until the sales start, so I would hold off..

I have another concern, and that centers on that BenQ LCD you are going to shell out $600 for..It is a VA panel, which has decent blacks, but is fairly slow compared to the new 1440P IPS Panels..Also since you are buying a new GPU that supports FreeSync, why you wouldn't be buying one of the 144Hz 1440P FreeSync LCDs sorta blows my mind..

1. You are a gamer. FreeSync/G-sync is a gaming changing tech.

2. You are buying a new GPU that supports FreeSync.

3. You are in the market for a new LCD (and aren't buying a ~$100 POS)

4. There are awesome 1440P 144Hz IPS panels out that are kick ass.

5. You can afford it, and even get 0% interest (per your post above).

See where I am going here OP?

I'm enlightened. Honestly I had no clue (god...I love these boards) I'm a hack of sorts. Have built my last 3 rigs myself, but I'm no "techie" Any 32" 1440 IPS panels w/ Free Sync/G-Sync that you know of?

Looks like I'll be doing a lot of reading this morning. Very cool of you to help me out. Thanks!

Well...I spent some time looking into AMD's Free-Sync & I don't think it's for me. If I played games that required a lot of GPU, then maybe. I play (almost exclusively) static turned-based games like Age of Wonders, Heroes of Might & Magic etc. I do play some StarCraft II (RTS) games. I'm going to stay the course with the MSI R390X & that 32" BenQ monitor. Just keeping my fingers crossed that it will be a BF deal.

FWIW, I bought an MSI R9 390 8Gb (no "X") two weeks ago from the egg. Between sale, price match, and rebate, It cost me $299.99. (Woot, under $300! ;) ) I offer this as a price point. The "X" would be great if you can get it with 8Gb and under $300.

Glad you're happy with your R390. That price now can be had @ $300.00 I'm hoping the R390X 8GB goes on sale for BF. If not, I'll just play the waiting game as my old 2GB Radeon 7870 is still hanging in there.

Set up a deal alert for the 390x at http://slickdeals.net/ . Something will come along eventually. I did the same for the 390, and I ended up with a nice three fan 390 model for $250 shipped after rebate thanks to a deal alert.

John: Very nice of you. That was easy to set up. Thanks a bunch for your insight!
