This guy went through a lot of trouble to make a replica of Thor's hammer only he can lift. You have to admit, the end result is pretty cool though.

The last guy in the video used the smart way to remove the hammer. Spin the hammer off the metal then lift it off with ease. :D

Guys with too much time on their hands make some of the coolest stuff on earth.

Funny. Couldn't watch the whole vid, do they try and fool more people? Be a fun way of introducing the topic of magnetics/electro magnets in school though.

RFID in a ring would have been faster and more concealed.

Still pretty cool.

Yup my thought exactly, that or some other near field device or heck some longer range radio source with a remote control in his pocket.

But yeah I wonder what the pull force on that electromagnet is (sorry if he said it in the video i have sound off now). I would think you might kick it sideways then lift it up.... and then the hilarity ensues when you have a strong magnet waving around :D

@ Steve, Your comment link isn't going to the thread but the News page.

Looks like the batteries died to me for the last guy the way it spun off the sewer top.

Want to see a good dead-lifter get in on this. Can you even lift bro!

It wasn't that the batteries died, if you noticed when he was demoing it with the case off at the beginning of the video the magnet only energizes when someone touches the handle. So really not only can you bypass it by knocking it away from the surface, you could probably also just grab the head of the hammer without triggering the electromagnet. You would definitely have to be careful not to get your hand under it as you pick it up then bumping the handle, that could get ugly...

Still an interesting project nonetheless.

this is pretty cool, but if it were me creating this i'd do like some others suggested and have a "remote start" keyfob that turns it off/on, so you can do so at any time. then have an RFID chip hidden in a watch/bracelet that only deactivates it within a certain (very close) proximity so that it's 100% seamless when you reach down to pick it up and you don't have to have your hand in your pocket to arm it with the fob.

still pretty damn cool, regardless

damn, that video is blowing up....when i watched it this morning, it was only at around 500k views....now it's already over a million

I was thinking watch would be easier, but a ring would rock too. A thumbprint scanner is kinda obvious, whereas an RFID type system would be pretty easy to hide.

Still, this is a fun use of technology. This dude may eventually develop some awesome device or technology. I like to see people playing with tech. This is the kind of stuff that inspires kids into STEM programs.
