I could be wrong, but don't apps like Twitlonger, JumboTweet and others already do this?

Twitter is building a new product that will allow users to share tweets that are longer than the company’s 140-character limit, according to multiple people familiar with the company’s plans. It’s unclear what the product will look like, but sources say it would enable Twitter users to publish long-form content to the service.

Great, so now they can type more about shit that absolutely NO ONE gives a shit about. And I bet they'll still abbreviate things and type like neanderthals

Oh great. Now tweeters not only can tweet when they are taking a shit, they can expand on how many turds are coming out.

Imagine how much more incoherent rage you could put in a longer Tweet.

Nobody will be safe from online outrage again.

I think that it's really revolutionary that Twitter is doing this and is a HUGE step forward in redefining the technology-assisted communications between humans across the globe. Just imagine being able to INSTANTLY send 145 or even 180 characters of text to another person on whatever topic is on your mind! It's like...well, a whole new world of awesomeness was just opened up and people can now share longer thoughts than ever before that they could never have previously shared since computer technology always forced people to only use 140 or fewer characters! OMG I think I'm gonna have a brain meltdown over this!!!!!!!!!

The evolution of tweeter has been fascinating. I think the original idea is still very good - a way to quickly share brief messages. We all still use SMS right?

The problem is modern tweets are almost indecipherable unless you're heavily into tweet-speak. They're usually just a jumble of hashtags and shorturls with more of a 'me-too' vibe related to some random subject.

Twatter is fine.... (I misspelled that first, and I'm leaving it). It's a good way to send news updates live or whatever.

The whole benefit was the small size. Sometimes, 140 wasn't enough and you needed a little bit more. I'm just afraid that it will get so large that it would make more sense to make a blog post or a Facebook post or whatever. Twitter was so good because it was taking those in such small bites. I hope most people still use it that way and not start posting a lot larger things that should be posted elsewhere.

I forgot why 140 was the limit in the first place. Always assumed it was something to do with the tech at the time.

Great. More characters to say horrible racist/sexist things.

I think part of it was so that it could work via SMS, which had a 160 limit, leaving 20 for the username. It was also meant to have quick little bits of information/jokes/updates/etc instead of long in-depth conversations. I'm not sure why that is considered a good thing, but that was the reasoning behind it.

It's about fucking time. My god the current limit is such a pain in the ass. It would be perfectly fine if it didn't include the @whoever's and the hashtags.
