I think this is a pretty good price to test the waters of VR, though Samsung’s variety will only work with some of the company’s recent devices.

The new, consumer-minded edition of the Samsung Gear VR is lighter and more comfortable, Koo said, and will be compatible with four high-end Samsung smartphones: The Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. A previous version of the headset intended for software developers and early adopters cost $200 and worked with the Note 4 and Galaxy S6.

$99 for a plastic shell you wear on your head then $600 - $800 for the phone that you put inside of it to use it. So it really is $700 - $900.

So, it's a VR for a specific Samsung phones? $99 doesn't sounds that cheap then.

I'm interested in this stuff... but is there a reason the S5 won't work with this?

if it's just a hunk of plastic with zero electronics in it... why so expensive? and why for 5 dollars more can they sell adapters that will open up the use of any phone with a good display? Nexus 6 for example?

I love samsung stuff -- but they aren't making it easy for "everyone" to get in the VR game.

Yes, but it may give Samsung a competitive edge. If somebody is on the fence between Samsung and some other device (esp an iPhone), this might be a feature that pushes them over to Samsung.

VR may fail, but there's an awful lot of smart money that's betting it will succeed (esp once the tech gets cheaper, smaller and lighter.

I thought 3d TV looked cool, but apparently people don't want to wear some lightweight glasses... I can't imagine people want to wear huge chunks of electronics right on their faces.

There is no viable alternative available to man kind at this moment. So if you want a fully immersive synthetic world.....your gonna have to put some stuff on your head. Sorry.

I tried the $200 version. It's more than just a plastic shell. There are projector style optics inside.

It was pretty damn amazing.

This is exciting news. I will soon be able to get rid of my family and have a VR family instead that I can just tab out of.

Shut up Timmy

I hope it comes out soon. I've been waiting to try this stuff since I got my Note 4. The Gear VR for the note 4 never went on sale here.

Now I have a.note 5 and still no VR... For $99, I'll bite if they an get this thing on store shelves...
