My uneducated guess says that CDEC will probably be the favorite to win.

It's similar to any competition, you have to be a fan of the game (or at least MOBA kind of games) to enjoy its tournaments. Just as how a chess enthusiast would enjoy watching the the World Chess Championship tournaments, while the rest of us would find it less exciting even if we know how the basic rules of chess.

EG vs: LGD

The Chat on the Steam App is hilarious or it was yesterday everyone was typing in USA.

I had to google what Dota was since I had no idea.
I watched the first 2 matches and noticed that they waste a lot of time just selecting the hero they are going to use. I think it took 20 minutes for them to choose.

the game does look interesting though.

The draft phase is the most difficult. You have to think about what the team plans on using in their lineup as there is a pool of over 100 heroes to choose from (really only about 15-20 are viable in the current meta). In this phase each team thinks about the best possible composition while banning certain heroes that give a large advantage to the other team. If they think XXX is an amazing player when he uses XXX they will ban that hero specifically to prevent that player from using his best hero. They also have to make sure they choose heroes such as XXX easily counters XXX but if XXX pairs up with XXX then they are unstoppable. It's the team captains job to make sure he picks/bans the right heroes and assigns them to the right players and the most important part of the game.

You really need to know a decent amount of the game and play a few matches to really enjoy how much skill it takes to play. That blink dagger combo into Roshan pit from Earthshaker was just the most amazing play that completely destroyed CDEC. To quote Tobi "it's a DISASTAH!".

There is a reason it takes time. Champion select can make or break the game right there no matter how good your mechanics and infield coordination could be. Lots of strategy to go through.

League of Legends has way less variables and is much, much simpler by comparison.

CDEC will wipe the floor 3-1 with EG. mark my words.

EG were the huge favorites going into this match. While CDEC did manage to knock EG down to the lower bracket finals (upset) they were over matched in a BO5. CDEC is probably the 4-5th (VG, iG, LGD, and Ehome are all better IMO) best team coming out of China and had a "cinderella" run so congrats to them.

of the over 100 heroes, is the entire pool available to both teams? I was reading some things about the game but didn't see anything about that.

Yes and no, currently the only heroes not available in Captains Mode are Earth Spirit and Oracle (due to balance reasons, Oracle for example is a new hero so she's still being tweaked) but other than that yes the entire pool is available to both teams aside from the 10 heroes that get banned during those phases. Certain heroes are usually picked or banned 100% of the time because of their current match up and synergy with other heroes. For example Leshrac was seen banned 99% of the DOTA 2 international tournament because of his strong lane presence, crowd control, disables and speed in which he can take down structures. If played right a good Leshrac can overwhelm a team if not taken care of early. EG knew the matchup and saved their ban for stronger initiation heroes and was able to easily counter CDEC's Leshrac by early aggression.

When they do the best of 5 match, is each match it's own game and they just restart the game each time, or is it set to 5 matches and it keeps track of the previous games?
If it is the latter, then it would be interesting if each team can only ban 1 hero one time during the 5 matches, or ban that hero every other match.

And what decides who gets first pick during the drafts?

Each match is a new game so none of the bans or choices carry over to the next one.

The first pick/ban is done by the Radiant "Green" team. The team going Radiant is decided at random or by the bracket arrangement I believe then it alternates. The Radiant picks their hero first but the Dire gets 2 picks immediately after.

It has a VERY steep learning curve, best thing to do is play some bot matches and get used to the mechanics, can even add some friends to play bot matches with and show you the ropes

Basically kids today play DOTA 2 and want to become pro back in my day kids collected baseball cards and comics and wanted to be a pro. Comic book artist being the easier of the lot.

Play on Easy and Medium, Hard is good if you want to learn what lane harassment feels like but bots have a 0ms response time which means the second you try to do something you will be countered instantly. And once bots go into the team fight stage they turn into a steamroller.

Wat?

How it actually works for this tournament:
The team with "choice" may either choose whether to be first pick or second, or else to pick a side. The other team then makes the remaining choice.

In this instance, CDEC had "choice" for the first game as the upper bracket team, then it alternated. Game 1, CDEC chose first pick and then EG chose Dire. Game 2, EG chose Dire and then CDEC chose first pick. Game 3 was the same as Game 1. Game 4, EG chose first pick and CDEC chose dire.

The drafting order goes
1Pick bans
2Pick bans
1Pick bans
2Pick bans
1Pick picks
2Pick picks
2Pick picks
1Pick picks

1Pick bans
2Pick bans
2Pick picks
1Pick picks
2Pick picks
1Pick picks

Note that most people just play "All Pick" where you are free to choose whatever hero and are not required to undergo a phase of banning and picking with captains etc. Tournaments, however, follow this "captains mode" banning and picking convention.

Do not play against other people, keep it to bots for a while or you will want to smash your very large computer monitor.

Ya, that is what I read in one of the FAQ's I was looking at. Play with bots to learn the game first.
I don't get frustrated and take it out on my stuff anymore, lol.

Dont worry, this game is a special kind of stupid and incites a special kind of rage, dont expect people to be friendly like...ever

Sadly, this is true. Once you get the hang of playing against easy bots, you could try to play against humans, but I'd recommend gaming with a buddy who knows the game. I'd offer to help, but I'm going to be out of town for the next few days.

One other thing I'd suggest (after learning the basics) is watching some games on YouTube, preferably tournament replays. That will give you some ideas on how certain heroes should be played. The best skill is really map awareness. You can have shitty last hitting and denying, and still be decent player. This will allow you to die less often (and dying often is the best way to bring out the little whiny bitches on your team).
