Sexism In Video Gaming Is Just Another Form Of Bullying

You have to wonder if the people that conduct studies like this ever played online games? Personally, I don't think so. If the researchers were actual gamers, they would know that being anonymous on the internet leads people being complete jackasses to total strangers. I'd say that 99.9% of the comments during any match is straight trash talk. It doesn't hurt my feelings, I don't feel bullied, I mute the person and move on. It really is that simple.

But in a study that we just published, we show that the cause could be something much simpler: the negative and sexist comments expressed by some men are really just a form of bullying, motivated by the fact that they are perceived as being lower in the pecking order.

I read the title, and the first thought that came to my mind was... yup, it absolutely is a form of bullying, feminists attacking video game makers because some character shows too much cleavage or what not is absolutely a form of bullying, and it's a type of bullying we allow without question unless you yourself want to get bullied.

The conversations in lobbies for online matches are burned in my brain I remember this one lobby during Halo 4 Jesus man this guy was trying to predict this kid's race and he goes Philippian. The kid goes this guy is good.....

I love trashtalkers, because most of them are so easy to drive into extreme rage with few witty comments. Fun for the whole server. :p

Yup. It's fun sometimes to drive those guys into a frothing rage while just calmly speaking and not even needing to insult them in the process. Eventually they just go full retard and manage to say something so embarrassing they just log off.

If I'm not in the mood to mess with them, I just report/block/mute/ignore/whatever and move on. I don't get why so many people these days still seem to think that someone running their mouth online can't simply be ignored.

Most of these people are young boys who have real life issues. And since there's no consequences on the internet they'll spew whatever they think will drive you to hate them. Women are easy targets if they react and they do react. Just ignore them or tell them Gabe Newell hates them.

Considering how immersive games are yeah even I have a hard time escaping the latest FPS.....

So reading the link, the people who weren't performing well mouthed off on a female member of the team, but they didn't do it as often when it was a male member. My question is, do they know the age of the players who sucked? Willing to bet the weaker ones were kids, and in that case of course they are going to bitch at someone they think won't talk back, where most male adults won't tolerate it.

I love these topics as they provide the opportunity to link to John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad theory:

There was no transcript of what exactly was said. A negative comment isn't necessarily a bullying comment. It said the men who thought they were getting whooped by a woman said negative statements. Probably because their buddy next to them said "haha you got beat by a girl!"

You should try reading more than just the title. The article and study have nothing whatsoever to do with video game makers.

I know at least two women who gave up World of Warcraft because of the incessant harassment. I gave it up because it was a never ending time sink, but I did get kind of tired of the jackholes there.

I think it's less sexism and more just plain bullying than anything else.

Yeah no shit sherlock... maybe you should try comprehending what is written, especially that first part where I said "after reading the title the first thought that popped into my head" see this means that before I even had a chance to read the article, this is what I was thinking, what comes after that is irrelevant because I wasn't talking about what came after that.

Trash talking in competitive environments? Say it ain't so!:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I have yet to see any indication that anything came after that first thought.

I think you meant to say Filipino.

A Philippian would have been a person who lived in Philippi. And that would be impossible unless the person was older than 600 years.

Not ever letting someone kill you in a multiplayer video game and bragging about it afterwards is now also considered bullying. You must shake hands with your opponent's avatar's corpse after you win.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH

How triggered and oppressed are you feeling right now, oh oppressed white male of the internet?

From the article:
Women receive up to 10 times more negative comments than men in online chatrooms and three times the negativity when playing online games.

Excusing being a shitlord "because that's how things are" is ridiculous, especially when you personally (a middle-aged male lifter) receives a tiny fraction of the abuse that women do. "It doesn't matter because it doesn't affect me" is some backwards thinking right there.

Sure, one jerk comment = instant mute in Dota, but I still question how that game or many others get any female players at all. What gamers (with no empathy) don't understand is that "grow a thicker skin" does absolutely nothing to increase your audience.

People will find better things to do with their time than deal with childish shitty behavior that feels institutionalized.

It's not backwards thinking it's questioning what is labeled offensive. It's similar to statistics to people raped by the opposite sex. What most of the studies omit, the numbers for men and women pretty much match each other up until it gets around 4-5 years ago, then men numbers drop off. Is it because men get over it or women start adding on sex they regret or something else?

For all we know, men being called a shitlord isn't considered offensive to most men, but it is to most women. Or women are mistaking the cutdowns that men tend to do to each other when they are having fun as harassment. People rarely ask questions about this but everyone loves to assume that men love to attack women anything they think they are being outperformed by them. And all that does is fuel the cries the world is out to get women.

Do you have a source for that data? It looks like the statistics I've been able to find indicate that women are the victims of rape many, many more times than men with men being far more likely to commit rape (and pretty much any other violent crime) than women. I'd be interested in seeing different crime statistics if there are any that run counter to the stereotype.

Geez who invited the SJW. The fact of the matter is that men don't take trash-talking in games as "abuse", we take it as trash-talking. Same goes for delusional women who think men don't make sexual jokes with other guys.
"No fun allowed"
-woman who tries to enter male dominated profession/hobby/group

So women are weak, got it. Thanks, for the info!

Or maybe in most games and chatrooms, the women just take things as being mean when it is just normal online banter.

The male vs female voice is interesting.. but they did only test one game.. that is most likely dominated by ~12 year old boys. At that age, as normal, but misguided reaction to girls that they like is to act exactly the opposite.

So basically this study does not show what they think it shows.

Protip: Using "SJW" as a pejorative is like holding big sign that says "Look how stupid I am"

Can political correctness go to far? It sure can. Are people overly sensitive? Sure, sometimes. You know what's worse than all that? The internet nerd response.

translation: You guys are right, but you insulted me, so you're fucking losers. Stopping harassing us, you fucking losers. Did I mention you're losers? Us SJW's are infallible, even though I admitted you're right, you fucking losers. Now stop insulting us, you fucking losers.

But we all know the truth about it as:
to make me feel good about myself.

I really hate this image that things that don't involve women are somehow bad. It's like that overweight girl that wanted to join an all boys military school, failed out because she couldn't handle the physical challenges, after she sued to get in. Personally I wouldn't want to date a girl that played video games all day.

Decided to read the actual study, just for fun:

We played a total of 163 games of Halo 3 in the two manipulations. We stopped at 163 as this
is a substantial time effort. Data could not be analyzed during the experiment as the transcripts
needed to be transcribed. Of the 163 games, 82 were in the female manipulation and 81were in
the male manipulation and players only spoke within 102 of the games. A total of 189 players
spoke in these 102 games; all of them were male. This is not to say that women did not play,
just that they did not speak.

Pretty big assumption by the researchers.

Our study demonstrates that video games offer a unique opportunity to examine variation
in sexist behaviours and the situations that result in changes in sexist attitudes. By demonstrat-
ing that female-directed hostility primarily originates from low-status, poorer-performing
males, our results suggest that a way to counter it may be through teaching young males that
losing to the opposite sex is not socially debilitating. This can be most easily done using video
games as the gaming population is nearly equally split between men (52%) and women (48%)
[21].However, given that there is a general bias in game preferences between the sexes [
39],first-person shooters largely remain male-biased communities not unlike some male domi-
nated work and study environments (e.g., the technology sector, engineering, the mining
industry) where women experience greater frequencies of sexist behaviour.
The idea that video-
games may be reinforcing such gender segregation as the norm for many teenagers is troubling
given the fact that a significant proportion of them are gamers.
Such ideas have the potential to
spill over in real-life interactions [40] and promote socially unacceptable behaviours such as
sexism.

TLDR: they already had their conclusions before the study even started.

SJW's are essentially a form of internet nerd response.

You'll find dubious sources linked from places like MRA websites.

It's rapey everywhere. Rape culture all around.

That kind of comes off as "I get to speak my opinion, but you can't speak yours.". So, people get to bitch and moan and talk massive shit, but internet nerds can't give a retort? That's the fucked up part. I guess if you argue with the study, you're a bigoted misogynist racist internet nerd neckbeard living in his mom's basement....

People talk shit in games. People talk shit in sports. Anything competitive, people talk shit back and forth. Yes, sometimes people fucked my Mom. But, that's rare and it's usually kids saying it (my son finally heard someone say they fucked his mom... He told me to stop talking like that :) Last part was a joke). Most guys can handle the back and forth trash talk. A lot of girls can, too. They give it right back. Then, there are those that are too sensitive and probably shouldn't be playing those kinds of games or sports. Soccer, Football, Baseball, multiplayer gaming - you're shit, your team is shit, we're going to kick your ass! After the game? Good game, guys. You did a great job on defense. See you next week!
