Looking at the time line of processors it seems that the 2011v3 socket is here to stay for another year and the best cpus are last years batch of 4/6 core variants. Is there any news on a new socket revision coming or new wave of processors this year?

My i7 930 + 7970 is still going but I need to prepare for its successor :)

It's possible we may see the skylake chips by the end of the year, but who knows at this point. Rumors abound as to whether or not there are yield issues, or whatever. I'd say if you've held out for this long, might as well wait a bit longer. Not sure if the new standards will be implemented, USB 3.1, etc. I'm holding out, but I am on a 4.6Ghz 2700k :)

Not like AMD is even in the picture, so no reason Intel can't/won't milk every single minor revision as long as possible. Since 1155 don't think there has been any real compelling reason to upgrade.

Skylake in August/September
Skylake-E Q3/4 2016

Best to jump on one of those, the latest rumors speak of Cannonlake delays which is pretty believable as its a new process node and a "Skylake Refresh" called Kaby Lake will fill the gap, similar to Haswell Refresh.

I just looked up the Skylake you all speak of and yes 1 year until the new chips come out. I guess I'll just use my ancient 930 and 7970. I need to take it outside and spray out all the dust stuck on the heatsink. Even if I upgrade with [H] parts I dont think I'll even get a significant boost in performance. Maybe by next year I'll get a 4K monitor and make it worth it.

I will have to just wait like everyone else and move on in another year. I've been wanting a Surface Pro for some time so maybe that will be what I get.

The performance of Sandy Bridge 4.5 years after it was released is amazing. At this point, it's got to down as the best CPU ever in terms of overclocking, improvements from previous chips, and longevity.

Skylake-E for me...

Planning on a Skylake-E/Pascal build in late 2016 to upgrade my aging x58 platform.

I was wondering the same thing. My i7-860 is feeling long in the tooth, and with Win 10 around the corner I figured it was time for a new build especially since I still have a 640gb WD Black as the main drive.

My 1336 socket PC will have to wait until next year to hopefully get a 6core upgrade that is worth it. I enjoy sitting on my ancient PC waiting for Intel to make me some more transistors to feed my enormous Corsair case.

Before the late 2016 (with possible slipp to 2017) I will have tons of pleasure with my current Haswell-E/Titan X .

I was planning on upgrading to Ivy-E when it came out.. then Haswell-E then Broadwell-E.. now i'm waiting until at least Skylake probably skylake-e before doing a board/CPU/RAM upgrade. In the mean time i'll just upgrade other components as needed.

That's fine and dandy with the e-peen.

I'm having tons of fun with with my 386DX-33MHz with 4MB of RAM, all for $5.00 at my local thrift store. Seriously, I am.

that might be nice for playing some Dark Sun RPG or commander keen. :)

If you're looking at the -E family of processors (since you mention LGA 2011-v3), Haswell-E is here to stay for a year+. Broadwell is becoming available soon in the mainstream platform (i.e. dual channel RAM, fewer PCIe 3.0 lanes) but if you need quad channel and more PCIe, I don't see anything changing for a good long while. Even Broadwell-E will be on the same platform, IIRC.
