hi all

i have purchased a couple of intel res2sv240 after every ine saying that they are the bee's knee's of expanders, (alongsode others like chenbro and HP). and i have an issue with them.

first of all, they run HOT, and i mean HOT. is this normal? the heat sinks are almost untouchable.

second, when i plugged them in, they decided to ruin 7 of my 14 drive flexraid system, and i have lost a pissload of data from it.

and during my attempts to recover my data (mostly un-successfull) i have managed to recover some, and moved it off my drives, and have formatted them so that i can start fresh; now for the weird issue.

the m1015 has 2 ports, 0 & 1. if i plug expander 1 into port 0, i get my drives to show and work in windows. if i plug expander 1 into port 1, i get my drives to show and work in windows. if i plug expander 2 into port 0, i get my drives to show and work in windows. if i plug expander 2 into port 1, i get my drives to show and work in windows.

HOWEVER... if i plug expander 1 & 2 into ports 0 & 1, i get absolutly nothing in windows.

the m1015 is on the latest IT F/W (i think it is the latest, but it is after p16 (suposedly the most compatable) and the system worked well before the expanders.

the fact that if i use them one at a time, it works, and when i try to use them both it dosent is weird.

anyone able to shed some light on what i might be doint wrong?

I only have one in my system but it works fine. Not sure about the heat but there has been no issues running in my morco 4220 with stock fans.

Could you daisy chain them? (plug expander 2 in to expander 1)

Are they plugged in to the motherboard or are you powering them with the molex connector? You can't do both.

i have found that the heat issue is resolved with a fan aimed at them. and have done that, was more concerned if they were meant to be that hot.

i havenot tried daisy chaining them, i will give it a go

they are plugged into the motherboard, i will try them with the molex, but i would perfer to have them powered by the board to save the cables and connectors.

even with daisy chaining them together, it still dose not display all the drives in the system.

Might be a bad expander? I recently installed the res2sv240 along with an M1015 in Windows using FlexRAID as well, and it's been running solid with no issues or data loss. M1015 is on P19 IT firmware, latest res2sv240 firmware (and it's powered by the motherboard), and I have M1015 ports 0 & 1 connected to expander ports 1 & 2 (actually might be 0 & 1 if numbering starts at 0). The way you have it setup seems pretty much the same as I do, maybe you got a dud?

Well they are meant to be in a rack case with high CFM deltas running tons of air plast them constantly so if they are in a lesser airflow environment then they will get very hot. But it's simple to add a small 40mm fan to their heatsinks for instance.

As far as other troubles, what firmware revision do you have on the expanders? Maybe they don't match?
