I had a pile of Microsoft points on my Xbox account. Some time ago, those points were converted to US dollars associated with my Microsoft account. Those monies expire June 1st (very shortly). That in itself is shitty - there wasn't an expiration on points before - why make my US dollars expire? Whatever. So off I go to spend the approximately $45 I had.
I decide I want to digitally purchase a $59.99 game. I pick the game - no option to use the money in my Microsoft account. There's only two buttons, cancel and buy. I'm thinking it'll ask me on the next screen to confirm my purchase and that's where you'd pick gift cards or whatever. Wrong. It instantly charges my credit card for the full amount - wtf. Ok I'll just call billing support and have them fix it.
I nicely explain that I must have fucked up, and could they please apply the $45 ish in my Microsoft account to that purchase and credit me. I was told sorry, but you can't use that money on a game and put the remainder of the balance on a credit card. I must buy a game of equal or lesser value with that money. Basically, I didn't mess up - that's how the system works. So now I paid full price for a game, and my points/Microsoft balance will still expire soon. No I can't use it on any games worth more than $45 - just gonna be stuck buying indie trash. And Microsoft will gladly keep any expired monies in their coffers.
Seriously - how anti consumer can you get? For comparison, on my ps4, Sony will happily let me put any amount into my wallet, then charge the difference to my method of choice. You know, they make it easy for me to click "buy". Hmmm steam does the same thing... And if there's any issues, you can email/chat/call them and they'll sort it out. Microsoft says "go pound sand".
I mean in the big scheme of things - it's $45. First world problem. But the whole thing just reeks and creates a very negative vibe toward Microsoft. They just don't seem to learn these days.
