Poor Microsoft account practices (xbox)

I had a pile of Microsoft points on my Xbox account. Some time ago, those points were converted to US dollars associated with my Microsoft account. Those monies expire June 1st (very shortly). That in itself is shitty - there wasn't an expiration on points before - why make my US dollars expire? Whatever. So off I go to spend the approximately $45 I had.

I decide I want to digitally purchase a $59.99 game. I pick the game - no option to use the money in my Microsoft account. There's only two buttons, cancel and buy. I'm thinking it'll ask me on the next screen to confirm my purchase and that's where you'd pick gift cards or whatever. Wrong. It instantly charges my credit card for the full amount - wtf. Ok I'll just call billing support and have them fix it.

I nicely explain that I must have fucked up, and could they please apply the $45 ish in my Microsoft account to that purchase and credit me. I was told sorry, but you can't use that money on a game and put the remainder of the balance on a credit card. I must buy a game of equal or lesser value with that money. Basically, I didn't mess up - that's how the system works. So now I paid full price for a game, and my points/Microsoft balance will still expire soon. No I can't use it on any games worth more than $45 - just gonna be stuck buying indie trash. And Microsoft will gladly keep any expired monies in their coffers.

Seriously - how anti consumer can you get? For comparison, on my ps4, Sony will happily let me put any amount into my wallet, then charge the difference to my method of choice. You know, they make it easy for me to click "buy". Hmmm steam does the same thing... And if there's any issues, you can email/chat/call them and they'll sort it out. Microsoft says "go pound sand".

I mean in the big scheme of things - it's $45. First world problem. But the whole thing just reeks and creates a very negative vibe toward Microsoft. They just don't seem to learn these days.

Did you buy the game within the console, or from another device on xbox.com? The reason I ask is I have used split points/credit and cc from a console, but they removed using points/credit if you try from xbox.com

Yeah i split payment on xbox one all the time due to xbox rewards credits and bing. Search credit.

So update time. The live chat guy was way not helpful. Like at all =\ But he did give me a customer support phone number for the xbox division. I called that number and got a a very friendly and helpful person. She explained that the website is fubared and it can't do split payments, and it's misleading. Additionally, the email is misleading because it says "spend your points/$ right here - boom hyperlink" yet you can't do it there - you have to use the console.

I suggested they just void the transaction and I'll do it again from the console. No can do! Apparently that doesn't work on the 360 - that's possible for the xbox one, but not with the older hardware. So long story short, they credited me back the money while allowing me to keep the game (because they can't remove it), and also allowing me to keep the money from the points. Thanks for being a good long time customer, sorry for the confusion, etc. So that was excellent customer service right there and they went above and beyond - so much so that I feel dirty now =\

I'm going to let the points expire and not spend them now - Microsoft can keep that money. That works out to a small discount on the game for me ($15) - which wasn't what I was after but I'll take it for the hassle. (all I really wanted was to easily purchase a digital game on their website, using monies in my account first, then pay for the difference). But man - what a convoluted mess over a single digital purchase! But in the end they did more than right, so I can't bitch and then fail to praise when they fix it ;)

Long story short - don't use the microsoft website, use your console and save yourself the hassle - regardless of what the mass emails are instructing otherwise...

Yeah that would frustrate the hell out of me. Glad it worked out in the end.

I am sorry I wasn't way helpful but you contacted a community chat representative and not Microsoft billing support. I gave you the number that was on the same page that linked you to me "Community Support". Im glad the path I pointed you finally worked out.
