Hey there,

I don't have any cpu temp issues atm (27c idle/60c loaded), but this is just a random thought that occurred to me yesterday while I had my case open...

My case has the mobo cutout to facilitate installing/changing a heatsink mounting bracket without having to remove the mobo from the case. I installed an Evo212 ( which works extremely well !) while assembling the machine, so that's not a concern either....

What would happen if I mounted a thin, low-speed fan UNDER the mobo, blowing up onto the bottom of the CPU area ?

Do you think this would result in a significant cpu temperature reduction or not ?

whatchathinkin ?

actually mounting a fan rear the mobo help A LOT. specially when overclocking are taken into consideration with power hog chips because it not only cool better the socket and processor it also keep cooler all the VRM and rest of motherboard... actually I think in 7 of my machines I have adapted a fan rear the motherboard.... about CPU temps at least in my case temps are better for 2-3C which its nice IMHO by just adding a fan =D.

Well since my temps are fairly good already, I really don't think -2-3c would be enough of a change to justify the expense of the fan + the time to install it.....but I may try it anyways just to satisfy my own curiosity :D

maybe not at the processor level, but when you have much lower temps in the rest of the motherboard components it worth every minute you spend mounting it..

As said, it won't do much for your CPU, but it'll help keep your board cooler. Especially if you have a 2011 board with VRMs on the bottom of the board.

Well, my mobo is an 1150 version, which stays around 30c. However I will be building an X99/Skylake rig this summer, so I may use this mod there if it proves worthwhile.

THanks for all the input so far :D

The original CM690 had a mount for an 80x10mm fan under the mobo/CPU. The biggest issue is that there's generally not a lot of room there for a big fan or much airflow. You end up with a fan that's not all that quiet and isn't moving that much air. I'm sure you could make it work better in another case with a different setup.

Any type of cooling is helpful really, can make quite a bit of difference in longevity.

You may be better off putting a big fan that blows directly on top of the motherboard where the VRMs and inductors are. Those two heat up quite a bit at load and located right next to the cpu.

I already have 3x 120mm front intake fans blowing a good bit of fresh air directly across the mobo, and 3x 140mm exhaust fans sucking any hot air out of the case, so I think I have that part covered....

With that huge cutout under the mobo, I thought that perhaps some extra air blowing on the underside might help keep everything cooler in general......

The question I have is where will you be getting the intake air and where will you be exhausting it?

I would think the best way to set this up would be to cut a hole in the side of the case where the fan is going to mount.

Then try it both as an intake and as an exhaust and see which yields better results.
