I don't know how well this would replace a traditional monitor / keyboard / mouse combo but it looks pretty damn spiffy.

During the on-stage demo, apps could be placed on walls or floated in space, and resized based on the user's needs -- something we'd only seen in videos up to this point. Of course, this means that users in different locations can collaborate on 3D models without having to be in the same room. Any Windows 10 app can be used as a hologram with the headset, so getting work done at a place other than your desk will soon be a possibility.

Between this "AR" system and all the VR stuff coming out in the next 12 months, I feel like we're really on the cusp of a new era of tech.

It's an exciting time to be alive!! :D

It would be fun, but I don't know the practical applications of it. Sure, I'd pretend I was Tony Stark for a while, but after that wears off, what do I do? Sit back down where I'm not doing a whole lot of moving around.

Give me some killer apps, and I'm all over that. Looks amazing, and would be very cool. It's just that I'm getting older and not buying things that are 'just cool' with very little actual practical use. Fuck it, I'll still get it to play around with! :)

I'll be impressed when holograms like that can be projected in the air without the need for wearing any type of goggles or glasses, no extra hardware tech, just free floating real-in-world holograms. Until then, meh.

I doubt these glasses can do solid image projection.
Secondly, I doubt they will be able to match head motion perfectly to have objects look actually anchored to real world objects.

Looks like I'll pissing off my friends who's tech knowledge comes from small video clips like this, and is presented as fact.

This.

Until they figure out how to eliminate the head gear it is a novel concept but that is about it. People have proven time and again they aren't willing to wear crap on their face for long periods of time.

This can be the development phase to prepare for direct neural interface.

Learn what schema work for different people. eg some will like a virtual keyboard, some "point and click", some vocalize or subvocalize, etc

Virtual "screen" can be any size and shape and zoom depending on your attention/intention.

Soon we got the chip in brain, with memory and processor upgrades hopefully...

peace

I watched the live stream from the Build conference today. Very impressive. I would buy one of these in place of a single large screen tv and be able to have a big screen tv in every room I go to. I might also buy one and get rid of my 3 screen setup for my pc and instead have five virtual screens. I hope this is not snake oil.

Headgear or not, this tech is fucking cool! I want.

Ya so are you going to make it and sell it or will this be another courier.

that's not what I'd call a hologram
It's VR with a real world blend in. I would say its only AR if the room image is not through the camera but the additions look too opaque for that to be the case.

Its a in some ways more convenient implementation of occulus rift with better utility. They are basically using Kinect turned inside out to replace all the OR's mechanical tracking gear portion. Two already existing technologies blended in a useful way. However, we are not at the next stage of human evolution because of this alone.

Courier was never publically announced and this was just publically announced about three months ago. And the OS it's based on, Windows 10 isn't even done yet. I'm thinking that a release date for this will come with that of Windows 10.

I think this might be okay for simple interfaces (kinect like) and for display purposes but I doubt I'd want to be using virtual keyboards, virtual mice or a virtual watcom like tablet. I like having tactile feedback from real devices for typing, drawing and mousing (real multibutton mouse for gaming). I'm definitely not willing to give up my keyboard with Cherry MX brown keys!

Depending on cost/resolution capabilities, this could be a workable solution for those of us who use multimonitor setups for productivity. (Moving my office, hell even dusting my office is stressful)

If they can make this work it could be game changing. I have 15' ceilings and a wall with nothing obstructing it in my great room... the possibilities...

I just got done reading more on this and wow, this looks REALLY fun. Its not like watching 3d but turning your entire surroundings into an interactive surface with some floating object support.

I can see really busy walls wreaking havoc on this but if this turns into a real thing I'm taking everything off of my walls and forcing everyone to wear one of these in my house :D

interesting...it seems less bulky than the VR hardware we are seeing and intentionally less immersive but that actually makes it more usable IMO. I dont want to go into a fake world and cut off outside (I'm too paranoid) but to be able to play a RTS floating in space and still be able to look over and see the dog whining to go out or find my beer and take a sip sounds pretty cool. shopping could also be much more interactive.

I still have yet to hear a single person that has used the headset say that it doesn't work as they keep showing. Everyone seems to praise it. So I am definitely going to keep an eye on the release to get one if they come out at a reasonable price.

They keep giving a odd release time frame that is questionable if it will be going on sale around the same time Windows 10 gets released or if it is coming out shortly after.

Repost? I swear we already have seen this commercial/demo like a year ago?

Yeah, the tech is real but demos like that explore things that are theoretically possible, but much of the time they turn out to be impractical or unworkable.

I really think a much more usable and practical tech is to perfect speech recognition.
Really, if you could TALK instead of having to TYPE everything how much easier would life be? This would unchain you from a desk.

The problem with this is that it's hard for even a human to figure out native speech. Have you ever tried to write down, word for word, what people say to each other in a conversation? (Not a scripted, TV conversation, a real one.) Consistent transcription and interpretation of speech is really... really... hard, and one of the reasons why doing certain kinds sociological research analysis is so difficult and complex.

Such a thing will probably never exist - light just doesn't work that way. You need something to project it, and something to change it's direction in the middle of the air in order to do what you say, and unless we find some way to bend light in the middle of a room.... good luck.

wut? I don't think solidity is a defining feature of a hologram.

Yeah, I'm really curious about the ability to stabilize/match imagery, and I'm sure this is going to lead to all kinds of confusion about light and holography. However, I'm sure most adults don't and won't ever actually understand how light works, even for just basic viewing, let alone with holograms involved...

Looks cool I'm in for one.

I would rather have contact lenses that mimicked this display and not headgear, but that many years off.

A HUD would be nice for some of my day to day work, sometimes I feel limited by keeping up on three screens at work.

Wow. That's all I have to say is wow.

They've been intentionally vague but I'd expect to see this on sale in time for the Holidays. How well it sells will obviously be driven by the cost. I thinking $1k, maybe a little lower or higher but I don't see it going for what Google Glass was going for, considering how well that turned out. However I think this is a lot more interesting that Glass. I'm really curious about the development aspect.
