No matter what specs I upgrade in my rig, no matter the new mice with all the fancy gizmos and gadgets, I find myself missing my MX 518.

For the last 8-10 years, this has been my go to mouse.

Anyone else still using it?

This mouse has been through hell and back and still works like it's brand new.

Amazing quality and comfort for being this old.

Ive never had an issue with FPS games, applications, clicking etc....

This is a random, yet my shout out thread to the MX 518.

If tomorrow this dies on me, I'd pick up another in a heartbeat.

Thanks Logitech MX 518 :)

Now if only it had an exact replica that was wireless.

Just checked amazon, when did they stop manufacturing these?

I still own one MX518 (1600dpi), which I use at work. I had a 1800dpi version, but that one just broke down on me after being carried around too much inside my laptop bag. I think the cable just couldn't handle it.

If you're looking for a replacement, you could try looking for G400(S). It's almost like the MX518, the sensor and the finish are just a little different.
The sensor has been improved, though I don't think I can say the same about the finish.
I find that the G400 has less grip than the MX518. Where the MX518, with it's smooth and shiny finish, had quite some grip by kinda sticking to your hand, the G400 is less smooth / sticky and thus has less grip.

The newer version of the G400 is the G400S. Apparently those are now succeeded by the G402 and the G502.

Im still using my trusty MX518. Its super old and looks like hell but it still works great. I will be very sad when it dies. Not sure what I would pick up to replace it. Maybe a G502 or a G402 since they are they MX518 replacements. I have also been checking out the new mice from Rocat and they look pretty sweet. Might change it up just to see what else is out there.

Still using the MX518. Great mouse. Going on 10 years now. It still works well. No reason to upgrade.

Using one at work except the rubber grip has become a tad sticky and prone to attracting dirt.

The rubber may not have liked its (relatively long) time in the box so much. =/

I had an mx518 and then got an mx500 which I 'overclocked' to use 1000 mhz polling rate.

Were great mice but they ended up wearing out on me. Luckily, logitechs latest offerings have been stupendous. Specifically the g502 is the best mouse I've ever used. Changing grips took a while to get used too but it ended up being worth it.

When I swapped to a home theater setup and needed a wireless mouse I gave my 518 to my wife. She still uses it and it works fine, although it looks like hell now. The weird metallic look has faded and has even worn off in places.

I'm a clean freak and make sure I wash my hands basically before doing anything to prevent germs and that oily feeling and my mx500 the buttons were disgusting even with how clean I keep my space. It was just so worn down. It's like when some keys are just worn off on your keyboard except 10x more noticeable. One of the major factors in moving to a new mouse. Though the g502 has a similar yet different problem. The rubber grips on the sides seem to be great at exfoliating and collect little bits of dead skin. Pretty disgusting and haven't figured out a way to clean it effectively/efficiently yet.

I'm using it, and you can't stop me! This mouse is bulletproof, nothing to lose, clickin' away!

Newer isn't always better :). I have two unopened MX518 just sitting in my closet. Picked them up on clearance from best buy several years ago.

I could never justify to myself stocking up on a product I loved. I just refuse to believe there won't be a comparable or better product by the time it breaks down. Unfortunately that was the case with mx500/mx518 until the g502

I'm using one at work and its still going strong. For the mouse at home I just ordered a proteus core that I'm hoping blows me away like the first time I used the 518 all those years ago.

I hope it does. Definitely did for myself. Absolutely flawless tracking in my experience. Only downsides are the grips being different from the old logitech mice and the rubber grips picking up lots of dead skin cells

I am scared away from mice like that which looks so "wild and weird." The 518 is a traditional mouse shape to me - the proteus core has all kinds of angles and sharp edges. Does it feel in your hand the same as a 518?

Ah, I loved my MX518. Mine broke a few years ago, and I ended up replacing it with a G500, which broke about a year ago. Then I luckily found a G500 at a garage sale that I was able to buy with an Apple Magic Mouse, and a handful of Apple adapter cables for $5! I sold the Magic Mouse for $25, and cleaned up the G500 and it's been working perfectly ever since. So I basically got paid $20 to get one of my favorite mice. :) It's been so long since I have used the MX518, that I don't think I can fully compare it to the G500.

glad these are getting popular too. more games will now support 21:9 format. I got the LG one very early on last year and love it. I think it will be time to upgrade when there is a curved (a bit more curved then now) with good panel (oled?) and freesync/gysnc. Maybe a bit larger at 36-40 inches and drops to under $1000. Will probably be awhile before that happens

I think you're in the wrong thread

It's a bit smaller than the 518, but I'm really liking the feel of it. Will take a bit to get used to but otherwise its a great mouse with an awesome sensor. The shape looks weird in the pictures but when its in your hand it actually fits really well. All the buttons are easily reachable, and the mouse-wheel has some weight to it. I'm a fan of the button that unlocks it and it scrolls like a champ in long documents.

All in all happy with my purchase.

I had a red MX510 I used up until about a year ago when the mouse wheel broke. Lasted 10 years of being tossed around and stepped on. I replaced it with a G700S. While it has the same great feel to it as the MX510 did, I'm afraid it will shatter if I accidentally drop it at any point... The buttons for adjusting the DPI level are already feeling a little stiff.

Have been using it since February 2011. I have the 1800 DPI version with three teflon pads. Butter smooth with USB polling upped to 500 hz.

Aaaand... It's actually horrible for me. I'm a short guy and have a tiny hand with thin skeleton fingers.

It was so wrong for me that it actually went through an 'adaptation' phase whereupon the shell felt like it was clicking/shifting along with the buttons slightly. I Can't even reach the left forward side button with my thumb :D

The wheel feels cheap but other than that I actually love it now. I'm not using it to its full potential but it's a decent product. I hear the cable fails, but I'm careful with mine so no problems.

So, all in all, great mouse but I'm undernourished :D

The MX518 is an all time favorite of mine. That love started with the MX510 which I used for several years before I wore out. Moved on to a 518 which I used up until 2013 at which point I saw the G500 on sale for a good price.. bought in a pair. I later moved to the 500S and put the 500 in my laptop bag for use there.. it wore out after just 2 years, so under warranty Logitech sent me a G502 like shown a couple posts ago.

All in all, I don't think any of these newer mice have really blown me away like the 518 has. They're 'better', but not in the quantum leap sense that going from a cheap Microsoft intellimouse to a 518 was.

I have 7 basically new MX518s stashed, they get used sometimes for extra PCs when they're in need.

I have my original 518 at work. Well worn, had to be torn open and cleaned to fix double clicking, but still working like a champ. Got some replacement feet for it in the mail today.

I would be still using my MX518, but I let my ex use it while I experimented with laser mice. Never got it back. :( Using a G400S now, which is pretty much the same, without the cool finish.

I have an MX518 relegated to server duty. I like the g5 laser better. My favorite mouse shape was the huge gray original MS intellimouse explorer optical.

My thoughts

:)

Only addendum to the above would be that I picked up a Roccat Pure Military on sale to see how it is. Actually really like it and would continue to use it, if not for the heavy braided cord.

Compared to the 502, The 402 is a bit larger making it very similar to the MX518, and employs a more familiar mouse wheel.

I've been using an MX518 at home that I bought in 2007. The coating around the thumb area has worn off but the mouse works fine. I've also been using one at work that I bought in 2009. I only recently discovered that they quit making it, and I'm not sure if any of the new models will be as good.

I loved the MX518 while I had it! The closest I've found to it is the G400 / G400s. The G402 starts to deviate from the MX518 design.

g400s is the actual successor, and is an excellent mouse according to the mouse experts. that said, I have a new-in-box mx518 with receipt, which I am saving to ebay for $14,000 in 25 years

Get a new genuine IE 3.0 and hold on to that as well, those seem even more beloved than the mx518 xD

I still have two that get used and a brand new one in my closet as backup. G500s for my main rig though.

I had the G7. It looked a bit like the MX518 but it was not the same. Plus, it's very old technology by now.
