I have 2 Windows XP Pro computers and 1 Windows 7 computer and these computers need to be able to transfer files across the network to each other. I have them set up and working. Mostly I have to transfer files from the XP computers to the Windows 7 computer. After a few days the XP computers cannot access the Windows 7 computer. I have to reboot the Windows 7 computer and after that all works fine again for another couple of days. Is there some reason after a few days the Windows 7 computer would for reason do this?

Is this a domain environment? Workgroup at home?

Make sure that you have accounts on all three computers with the same username/password so permissions are functional.

This is just on a Workgroup, no domain. I do not have it setup to have to log in with a username and password. I want it to be able to access it without and this has worked perfect for years. The only different is when I had to replace that computer with a Windows 7 pc and now thus the problem has started.

Are you seeing anything at all in event logs - services/drivers stopping/stopped/unstarted/crashing (check taskman/tasklist) ?

Are all machines up to date in regards to OS and drivers (realize XP is EOS/L)?

Any issues with the Win7 machine using the network when the XP machines can't access the shares (ie ping, telnet, www, ftp never stop working) ??

sounds like your win7 box has some iffy issues. Can the XP boxes still ping the Win7 box when the transfers stop? Can the Win7 ping them?

This can happen if the Windows 7 computer thinks it is on a Public network.

Make sure the Windows 7 PC is set to Home or Work for network location.

A very simple, but very good recommendation that can often be overlooked.

What's the error?

That's like telling somebody "I'm sick, fix me!"
Well... the solution varies based on the symptoms.

Win 7 introduced a bunch of power save features. Make sure the Win7 PC isn't powering down the NIC. I have found that if a Win XP box ever loses connectivity, it often seems to remember the failure and quits trying, even if the connection is restored. Probably a setting somewhere to fix that but it has always just been easier to either reboot or do a release/renew on the connection.

Some "green" switches can power off a port that doesn't have traffic on it for a period of time.
