ESXI & Blue Iris Security Software

Right now my security camera system is a L5639 OC'd with 24gb RAM and onboard SATA from the Gigabyte motherboard. It's a bit overkill for the 6 cameras we have now ;) so I'm thinking of selling it, and making a VM for windows(any version i'd imagine) to run Blue Iris on.

I would be running it on an ESXI box running E5-2683 with 64gb RAM, 10gig, LSI+2gb cache controller for RAID10 of 4x4TB (or 4x2TB that I have now, not 100% yet.) for my security storage drives, as well as my NAS data. I'm trying to keep it 'in one' to keep power down. I'm also debating using 2x300gb 15krpm SAS drives for the Security/Cameras ONLY and keeping the other drives for NAS/general usage.

  1. Are there any problems running my security system / Blue Iris in a VM? It just seems "weird" to me to combine THIS thing into a VM, but maybe that's my mind...
  2. Is there better software than Blue Iris that does what it does? (I'm ok spending up to $300 if it does a lot of good stuff.)
  3. I recall someplace reading (on a forum) where you could spend $200 for VMWare something another, and get a little more from ESXI and/or vsphere/center/etc ??? Anyone have info on that I can't find the thread.

Any other esxi info I could use I'd appreciate it as this will be my first ESXi experience.

I don't see an issue with running g blue iris as a vm. The esxi licenses are 365 day licenses with the Vmugadvantage evalexperience.
 
With only a single host, will a free (5.5) license not work?
 
No need to subscribe to Vmugadvantage then, but keep it in mind if you ever expand to multiple hosts

What's limiting me from using the free version on a 2nd host, 3rd, etc...? (I'm curious here, not trying to avoid paying any fees. I've not recently seen a "free version" then have it limited to 1 system, what makes my 1 system different than my brothers, yours or whomevers?)

Is Vmugadvantage evalexperience limited to 365 days TOTAL?
Or do I have to renew every 365 days? *looks like you can renew every year*

And what would you consider the main advantage to Vmugadvantage (3 hosts?)?

Is 6.0 expected to become free or is it always the previous version?

FYI, I run Blue Iris on a VM without issue....however vSphere Licenses are not an issue for me. :)
 
You can use multiple free licenses with multiple hosts, but the big advantage I think is being able to use vCenter to centrally manage the hosts. Otherwise, you would have to manage each host individually, which may get tedious. Vmugadvantage gets you licenses for ESXi (which unlocks vMotion, etc), and also vCenter.

Thanks, sounds like Vmugadvantage will be the way to go, and seems affordable.


When running ESXi does it run off USB or can you run it off SSD for ESXI specifically?

Are there any benefits to running ESXi itself on a fast or slow drive / usb stick?

No problem at all running Blue Iris virtualized. I happen to do it under Hyper-V, but no good reason why ESXi should be any different.
 
Does anyone know if VMUG Advantage is for the given calendar year like a fishing license or is it from date of purchase + 12 mo? Can't seem to locate that.
 
I run Blue Iris as well as about 10 other VMs on less hardware than you were spec'ing. Details here if you want. Currently running 5 cameras at 3MP & 20FPS each. NO issues.
