How has the wifi and audio jack been? I've been holding off picking one up as I've heard the audio jack is unshielded and is almost unusable due to the static, and the wifi has a reoccurring issue of dropping connection frequently.

There is some static noise that's noticeable for me when there's no sound coming through the jack. But when sound comes through I can't hear anything. Not an uncommon issue with headphone jacks and at least with my particular device and experience nothing I consider anywhere near a problem.

WiFi would now and then not connect when coming out of sleep but since a BIOS that's not happened once that I recall.

Couldn't say no to this deal. Was looking for a deal on something that I can use for shuttling STL files to my local makerspace for 3d printing, I think this should do the trick.

I've heard 1GB RAM models are sub-par... I'd aim for the models with 2GB of RAM. They aren't too much more expensive.

For what you'd typically use a tablet this size for 1 GB will be ok in most instances. You will noticed slow downs during memory swapping which occurs a lot with device but at this price most can live with that. Tablet gaming, web browsing, video and audio playback, i.e. typical tablet activities should be fine. Don't expect a lot of Windows multitasking desktop action however.

This would be perfect for anyone looking to stream their PC gaming around the house, pair it with a controller mount and you're good to go.

Don't know where it's coming from, but I just got the UPS notice it's arriving tomorrow via ups ground. Must have a distro point somewhere in VA, MD or DC.

While true for sub~$100 you have to trim fat somewhere, and while yes we can debate on the shortcomings of the stream 7 for a hundo you can do a LOT worse with all the crapware tablets out there.

If you're doing basic tablet stuff with it and using the apps you won't suffer that much but if you're attempting to run the same workload you put on your Surface on the Stream 7 you're going to have a bad time.

Not trying to thread-jack but it seemed relevent: I returned the Stream7 for this WinBook (MicroCenter brand), mainly for the 2GB RAM.

http://www.microcenter.com/product/437499/TW801_Tablet_-_Black

It's on clearance at $99 (the TW802 [$120] actually drops the USB 3.0 port for USB 2.0) so stock varies by location. But it has been a great alternative to the Stream7:
-Additional USB 3.0 port
-microHDMI
-microSD
-8" screen

I use it for Steam streaming and Skype. Aside from a sub-par camera, works great for both.

FYI... At the bottom of the product page there is a paragraph:

"Optimize your Winbook TW700 and TW800
Thanks for your feedback, we're listening. To free up approximately 2GB of storage on all WinBook Tablet models, please visit http://www.microcentertech.com/winbook/namedeletedforsafety.exe."

If you click, Bitdefender reports:

"Bitdefender blocked this page
The page you are trying to access contains Trojan.Generic.12344813."

The more you know...

Wow...I hadn't even seen that section. That's very strange, I linked to the legit MC website. Thanks for the warning!

It has been widely reported by other users to be a false positive.

Thanks for this. Given some of the reported issues with the Stream7 I was really on the fence over purchasing it. Sure, it's cheap but that means nothing if I end up with a unit that doesn't work right. MC in my area was out of stock on the W801 (new) but they had 2 open box units so I ordered one of those. Same price as the Stream7, same OS, same resolution camera, more memory, more ports and a bigger screen made it a no-brainer for me.

What makes the Stream 7 interesting is its size and price. It was an impulse buy for me because I was curious to see how well Windows 8.1 would run on such a small, cheap resource constrained device. And the consensus has been very positive fortunately.

It's not a device I would recommend generally but it kind of neat to run a full desktop OS on something so small and cheap.

I have the 8" version and the wifi is much better after updating the drivers from HP. The audio static on the headphone jack is still present but not bad enough to notice it.

The page swapping is noticeable with 1GB of ram but add on the 5% off, a $25 gift card (buys a folio cover), and even more savings with a student discount you're left with essentially a $63 device ($38 if you consider the gift card) and I can't help but think those minor issues are worth every penny. I'd honestly consider the 8" version with it's free data for life or the 8" Asus version with an extra gig of ram.

I've paired mine up their mobile keyboard and a Logitech's ultra slim touch mouse and if you're realistic with your expectations it's a beast. I'm really excited about future versions.

I will probably Velcro mine to the fridge and use it for kitchen stuff.

You guys are saying the Wi-Fi fix requires a BIOS update and a driver update. Which is it? Possibly both?

Just run the hp utility and install all the updates.
