I have Hyper V running on my server, win2012 r2 and want to connect to it via my windows 8.1 computer via Hyper-V manager. Both computers are just using Workgroups and no AD.

This is what I get when trying to connect to the Hyper-V server:

"An error occurred while attemping to connect to the server. check that the virtual machine manangement service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server.

You do not have the required permission to complete this task. Contact the administrator of the authorization policy for the computer "server"."

Does it present a login to you? I'm thinking your PC doesn't have permission to manage the hyper-V server and you need to use login to account on the server or grant your PC user permission to manage hyper-V

It does not present a login screen. It just goes right to that message.

Windows remote administration tool is very finicky. I remember having a LOT of problems with this when first starting to try and learn it and Windows Server 2012. Even after setting up Active Directory I came to issues with it. But, it can be done. Active Directory is usually the easiest way to go though, yes. I know that AD is required for other WS12 services including live migration.

I've had this problem before, are both machines using the same subnet ? (yes, that really was my problem)

Then most likely the Windows Firewall is blocking a port you need opened. Try turning the firewall off and try re-connecting again.

Good link jacqkeen. It's the DNS resolution that normally causes the most issues.
