Android nerd, switched to iPhone 6 Plus

I was looking up the wrong name LOL

It's ' Slide2Kill8 Pro ' just bought it and installed. I like it, thx.

Anchor

I am not familiar with this app, but I guess it was just updated to work on iOS 8 now, and all the Jailbreak forums are cheering that is was finally updated, they say a big deal, because Gridlock was abandoned, and won't be updated.

I believe this allows you to place apps anywhere on the home screen ? Right now I am using iBlank, which are invisible icons to allow me to have space for Widgets, etc...

I think Anchor is supposed to lock icons in place. Been a while since I've used it, so I might be wrong.

Gridlock 2.0 is the ultimate "put any icon anywhere you want on any screen" app. Sadly, it's still not updated for iOS8. :(

EDIT: I WAS wrong, and very happily so! Anchor one-ups Gridlock and gives you icon placement carte blanche. :D

Oooh I may buy Anker. Sucks I just spent yesterday wasting time with iblank when anker was out there. Looks great

I have settled on this homescreen setup, looks crisp and easy to see. Looks great on Space Grey 6 Plus :) :)

Ok tig bitties

Lol at that nickname. Funny how no man alive could read that and think bitties was a misspelling of bites or something like that. The mind reads that as it wants to read it

Ha :). What, Tig Bitties is an honest name, what do you think it means ? :)

Don't really care about the customization, but is there anything along the lines of Tasker and Llama for iOS (including jailbreak)? The automation and convenience are my main reasons for sticking with Android for now.

And this touches on one of the problems in the iPhone/Mac world: a lot of the "I'll never use Apple products" talk tends to stem from preconceptions and stereotypes that either haven't been true for years, or were never true to start with. You haven't had to use iTunes for iPhone syncing for a few years. Macs are often comparable in price to Windows PCs with equivalent specs. And so on.
In my defense, I've known that you can just backup and restore straight from iCloud. My confusion came from the way MrCrispy worded his post, where he said, "backup to local or iCloud using iTunes." So that's why I need clarification on that.

Also, iTunes is still needed for copying local music or video files if phone isn't jailbroken. Sometimes, I just can't be on the cloud. So the issue with iTunes stands unless I jailbreak the phone.

iTunes isn't THAT bad. Honestly. It works perfectly fine for me. I wish I could just drag and drop files but whatever.

I use iTunes for backup/restore. That's it. iFunbox is a lot more versatile and useful to me.

For those who've tried Anchor, have you run into any problems with it? I've had icons like Settings, Clock, Phone all disappear. Lots of random resprings while trying to move icons. I ended up removing Anchor and the problems ended. Went back to Homescreen Designer.

Anyone have experience with my3g? It lets you use 3 g / LTE on apps that want to force wifi (like Amazon instant video). I'm really interested in it but not eager to pay $4 without knowing if it works properly.

Hmm... that's not good. I was going to try Anchor. I guess I'll stick with iblanks for the moment. Maybe Homescreen Designer later.

iTunes is stuck in the past, living the glory days of MusicMatch and RealPlayer. It's not even a good music or video player. I also don't buy any music or videos from iTunes and don't even want that option.

Apple needs to make a stand alone phone app with just phone functions and have a browser for the app store, and that's it.

That would be nice, however I don't see it happening. I use it at work for development, just not with my own devices. People really fumble around with iTunes, since it feels like you need to shut off your brain to use iTunes, it doesn't work the way anyone expects. iTunes is turning into a bit of a relic and they don't seem terribly concerned about it. I would be really interested to see how much media is purchased through iTunes (desktop version) and how much is purchased from iOS devices directly.

I don't buy music from Apple either. I only have mp3s except for some flac that I converted to alac (or whatever apple lossless is). My mp3s are either ripped from CDs or from google or amazon (prefer google bc of 320 bit rate). I use iTunes only to load music to my iPhone and also to listen to music on my HTPC while I'm working out. It works fine but I certainly don't love it.

I like using iTunes, although that's helped by both being a Mac user (iTunes is better-behaved there, not surprisingly) and having spent years learning a lot of its subtleties. It's definitely a bit daunting if you try to make use of more than basic features, but it's supremely handy if you want constantly updating playlists or have more to sync than just music and videos.

Finally got my 6+!! Settled for the 64GB because the 128 was constantly back ordered and, in all honesty, I really didn't need all that storage-peen. It's a sweet phone. One thing, however, is bugging me. Is there any way to get rid of the badge on Settings that indicates a new iOS (8.1.3) is ready for download? A jailbreak tweak called SoftwareUpdateKiller used to do it, but it's not working on my 6+. I don't think it's an iOS8 thing because the tweak worked fine on my 5s running 8.1.2. Any suggestions?

Apple Maps = wow pleasantly surprised.

I have been a hardcore Google Maps guy for 5+ years, and when I got the iPhone 6 Plus, I was afraid to try the default Maps on the iPhone, thinking it would suck and not work, per the old horror stories when iOS 6 first released Maps couple years ago.

Anyways, I gave it a go yesterday on my way to a project site, and it worked flawlessly, really great. Turn by turn was spot on. The voice was loud and clear easy to understand. The visuals were done well. Overall very impressed.

So what is "Maps" ? Is it still the Apple made maps program, or is it a Google Maps based app ?

Apple Maps has no connection to Google whatsoever

Maps is all Apple and, yes, it's come a long way since its clunky release. I don't even have Google Maps installed. No need for it.

Oh, I found a way to eliminate that annoying red 1 on the Settings icon. Icon Tool offers all kinds of options to modify icons.

Another cool app is Tage. It's like Auxo 3, Slide2Kill and others, but also has a feature that lets you switch apps by swiping left/right on the screen without having to bring up the QuickSwitcher.

a couple of random things from this past week messing around with my phone

- Classicdock is pretty sweet - brings back the ios 6 dock with reflections. Nice.
- The Elite 8 theme is really nice. Lots of options. Only costs 2.99 (although author asks for more)
- I was running 1one theme but got annoyed by their loading screens. I had trouble getting rid of the 1one loading screen (even after deleting the theme) but figured it out. You may have to delete the theme folder with ifile and then do a repair for winterboard. That wasn't ideal but it worked.
- The FlexyWidget is a nice widget if you get tired of Stripe

I suspect Apple's main problem at Maps' launch was that it overestimated how much time and effort went into a navigation app like Maps -- Google had years of work and legions of people working on its mapping suite, while Apple was cobbling things together with a small team and some largely off-the-shelf data. It's had enough time to iron out a lot of the kinks. Important, too, since early Apple Watch owners will no doubt lean a lot on Maps for getting around.

Apple hater's gotta hate.

I owned an iphone 5 for 2 years. I was greatly looking forward to getting rid of it. I only got it bc of my wife and I was completely bored with it. I spent hours pouring over everything Android. But I bought a Motorola Droid Turbo and hated it. Everything was better with the iPhone. I noticed multiple hardware issues with the Turbo. I was done with Android in less than a week.

So I get why someone may not like apple. But try both and see which is better. Sure, factory iphone is pretty boring versus Android but at least the iphone works properly and service is easy by walking into a store. Jailbroken, the iphone is pretty fun while still being reliable.

I'm thankful for this thread convincing me to jailbreak before 8.1.3 came out.

Yeah, this is a great thread. One of the most informative on [H].

Funny... you rarely, if ever, see Apple fanboys flooding Android threads with any negative B.S.

OEM and Mobusta were our resident Apple fanboys/trolls for a while. Haven't seen them post here in a while now though. I think Mobusta may have finally got banned from this subforum for it. He would actually PM a lot of us here thinking we were some raging Android nerds, antagonizing us with some retarded Apple-biased articles and posts. I just reported it and never responded.

Edit:

Had one I had saved still, lol:

I've been following this thread for weeks now, and I just don't care anymore. Apple is what I want and works best for me. I have absolutely no need or desire to customize every damn thing on the phone. The way I see it, if you want to customize every friggin' aspect of your phone go Android. If you just want a phone that is uniform across all models and receives regular updates, go Apple. Everyone else can go enjoy their circle jerk.

Yeah, I know you were pretty much just retaliating against everyone else trolling you for bashing your old Android phones so much and then turning around and praising the iPhone in the same post, so I don't blame you for acting that way at least initially.

I wasn't trying to group you with Mobusta though, he was just an outright troll/fanboy that jumped at every chance to derail most threads in here. You were just acting out against people making fun of you for jumping ship really. But making that thread with pics of shooting up your old Incredible was just asking for it. :p

Oh man, I forgot about that thread...that shit was hilarious.

For all you that don't know what T4rd and I are talking about, join GenMay, you noobs!

GenMay is still around ? I used to visit that site years ago for good laughs and pix of hot babes and nerdy tech talk.

There are trolls and irrational fanpeople on all sides -- it's really a question of what's in vogue at the moment. I find Android trolling odd, though. It amounts to going out of your way to fight a war that you've already 'won' (since your platform is already in the majority). It's pretending you're counterculture when you're actually the conformist.

Probably due to Apple being the first market leader and still is in terms of having the most marketshare as an OEM, just not as a platform/OS. So in that way iPhone users are still the most "conformist" and you're seeing it now also between Samsung and non-Samsung phone owners just because of how much Samsung has bastardized the OS and how popular it has gotten. Pretty much whatever is the most popular/common device among the masses is going to get the most criticism and hate among enthusiasts, and that goes for almost anything and everything.

Ha, never thought of or realized this. Its worth a chuckle.

Well, I can probably tout myself off here as one of the least biased person here, but in the flagship market, Apple still dominates. Have you seen the results of the last quarter? Android only "wins" due to all the cheap devices out there. But none of this got to do with why haters hate. Apple haters hate Macs back in the day before the iPhones or even the iPods. Apple haters hate Apple because the client base used to be heavy with computer illiterates, stupid rich people, hipsters, artists/musicians, and pretty girls they probably like... Apple products sucked for a long time.

The client base has only started to change when Apple gone Intel, and the MacBook actual became a legitimate laptop if not the best laptop around. Then people bash the MacBook because my-pc-laptop-is-cheaper, without realizing that the MacBook has a really good display and touchpad. Obviously, the iPhone is a really good phone too (this whole thread is all about it so I don't need to address it here). Business people now buy iPhones, iPads, and Macs. I just think it'll be a while before the belief of Apple client stereotype to be over.

Well, here's the issue: many of the people ragging on Apple on a forum like this are trying to boost Android, not their vendor of choice (with the exception of the occasional very loud Samsung advocate). They're actively trying to champion the largest segment of mobile they can, even if they're not conscious of it. Not that you're sticking it to The Man by getting an iPhone, but bending over backwards to support Android is like declaring that "real" indie music fans love American Idol.

Also, have to debunk some stuff: Apple wasn't the first market leader -- it hasn't actually had the OEM lead much at all throughout its history (that honor has usually gone to Nokia or Samsung). People like to create a "how the mighty Apple has fallen" narrative on the assumption that it was once the undisputed champ, but that was never really true to start with. Right now, it's poised to take the vendor share lead mostly because Samsung is flailing, and none of the Chinese OEMs are big enough (at least, not yet) to take Samsung's place.
