WHS 2011 Client Backup Problem

I bought an Acer laptop for my daughter for Christmas running Win 8.1. I can't get it to back up to the server. It shows multiple failures most days, and when I try a manual it tries but after several minutes it reports failure. I have 5 PCs backing up to WHS with no problems except this new one, including two with Win 8.1 and 2 with UEFI. I've uninstalled the connector and reinstalled to no avail. Not much to go on, but any ideas?

It doesn't mean anything to me:

The Windows Server Client Computer Backup Service received an abort process message from Aspire. Reason: 5.

So I have a little more information.

Ran a chkdsk /f /r twice. Didn't help.

Checked the error log on the Acer and it gave:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

Operation:
Gathering Writer Data

Context:
Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220}
Writer Name: System Writer
Writer Instance ID: {eed83a23-01f2-44f1-9a2f-237fe96232db}

So I ran VSSADMIN and all the writers came back as stable except for System Writer that has [5] Waiting for completion.

I'm thinking that the problem may lie with getting System Writer re registered. But most of the info I've found resets a whole list, and may not be for Win 8.1. Others suggest deleting registry keys that will get restored after boot. I don't know anything about VSS writers. Any suggestions on getting this one working again for Win 8.1?

I have seen this before on Acer laptops. Something in there recovery partition setup. If you Google it, you will find a few forum posts discussing the issue. I have not found a solution yet.

Problem solved. Found this answer:

Step 1. Uninstall Acer Backup -- fixes initial VSS error.

Step 2. Request the UEFI hotfix from MS and install. It upgrades the client software.

For me, the laptop did not have Acer Backup so I didn't do step 1. Step 2 appears to have solved it entirely. As they say, you have to install the kb2781272 hotfix, then run update on the server and clients to update the connector. All fine now.
