Sound bars

Hey all,

Just wondering what the general consensus about sound bars was, as I've never heard one before. Are they worth the money? Do you have to dish out a large sum in order to get any form of good quality sound from them? Do they last a while?

There's been a few sales on them that I've seen and I've been tempted, but I don't want to buy something without hearing some reviews (Reviews online seem to be after a rather short use, looking to hear from someone who has owned one for a while). Another reason I kind of want one is because I don't have too much space in my room. I have a rather large desk, but I need the space clear.

Any feedback or recommendations would be well appreciated. Thanks!

I have used a few for customers when I had to, in a home theater situation where low quality audio was acceptable.

Generally speaking, I avoid them for almost all situations. For PC gaming and general use, if space is a constraint, a nice Klipsch 2.1 pro audio setup would sound much better than even the best sound bar on the market.

For your computer? My dad tried one and it didn't sound great sitting 3 feet from it. Sounds fantastic on the tv though at 6+ feet. You will also need one with a sub to get any decent low end. I view sound bars as a good investment for people that want better than tv speaker sound in a small place and don't want to drop $$ on a proper system.

Sorry, forgot to mention this would ideally be for my computer and my television (Wall mounted above the computer, sort of) and hopefully Bluetooth connection to my phone. Worth mentioning that this would, unfortunately, be on the lower end. If a sound bar is something that wouldn't work very well for a computer, then I think I might avoid it. I was hoping to get dual solution here to justify it (If that's even possible, I don't even know. Used to have a pretty cheap system that we could do both).

Thanks for your inputs. I'm going to look into something different, maybe a bit down the road for a bit more money.

Wow, Klipsch 2.1 pro audio = 4.5 stars @ 1,203 customer reviews on Amazon.
Thanks, I needed that...

Fantastic? Purely subjective. Better than most integrated TV speakers? Sure. Not the best option for PC use.

1. You post wasn't even visible when I started my reply.
2. Sound bars sound really nice in small rooms for hdtvs, not HT quality - but that's obvious.
3. I do agree with your suggestion, I don't know why you attacked a suggestion that I didn't even give.

I just didnt want top mislead the OP into thinking soundbars were a fantastic sounding option for PC use. It was not meant to be an attack. Edited to reflect that.

I said they sounded terrible for PC use... whatever. Get the Klipch, I agree with that choice.

As far as TV soundbars go, I really like my Zvox 580 - of course I got it for $200 somehow on Best Buy's website - I think it was a pricing mistake tbh =x

I have to say I'm more than pleasantly surprised with the audio from my Yamaha sound bar + subwoofer set up on my HDTV. I had no desire to wire up my TV area with 5-7 speakers and buy another AV receiver for true surround. The sound bar + subwoofer solution is a nice alternative. For computer use, I agree with the others. Forget it. Can't go wrong with that Klipsch Promedia 2.1 for a good, inexpensive solution for PC audio.
