Sennheiser 598 - 169 @ Amazon

Any reason not to just go for the 558 when it goes for $100?

It appears their internals are veerrrry similar

My sister has been bugging me for ideas for a Christmas gift, and I have decided I would like to try some new headphones out. Currently I use 'phones for everything, music (mostly just my Pandora One since I am have slacked on keeping local media for the newer stuff I like), gaming, and all my movie use.

Will the Headphone amp on my SoundBlaster Z offer the proper "ommph" for these? Do I need to upgrade to stand alone unit? The SB Z is stated to be able to drive 32~600Ohm sets, but I from a quick peek on the product page I didn't see the impedance listed. I have been very happy with my SB Z for all my gaming, movie needs etc..I used to be very, very big into car audio SQ installs and such, but have very little experience in the higher end ($150+) headphone world.

My listening environment is a large downstairs living room (I'm the only one that uses it)..I have a utility closet behind a solid oak door that houses my washer/dryer and my Gas Furnace. When my dishwasher is running, I can hear it quite well with my MM2s on just wearing them with no audio playing, but with audio of any sort I can't hear any background noise.

Lastly, are these comfortable? I use my Beyer MMX2 headset because the sound is decent but I can wear it for 10+ hours and not feel it. I have a big head (I wear a 7 7/8" fitted cap so it doesn't squeeze my head since migraines+squeezing=epic fail)

The requirement to have an amp to drive the 600s/650s increases the cost even more if you do not already have an amp.

True, but anymore there are some very reasonably priced amps that will do a perfectly passable job driving an HD6X0.
