A new original series or new season of an existing show every two and a half weeks? Whoa.

Netflix plans to seriously step up its original programming slate in the next few years. Within five years Netflix would like to premiere a new original series or new season of an existing series every two-and-a-half weeks, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York on Monday.

I'm game, so far they have provided some quality original shows.

20 shows a year... If you watch 3+ of them, you are about the same value or better then what other content providers offer. Assuming $30 per season that amazon charges. Though if you pay per season with amazon you supposedly will "own" then until of course there is some contract dispute etc etc etc. And a lot of seasons are more then $30.

hmmm how many series (primetime, not news/talk) do other networks provide each year?

Good for them, if the content providers want to gouge they instead can instead deal with a competitor.

Even though their "original" content is not always theirs to start with (i.e. Arrested Development) this makes me hopeful that maybe they will pick up TV shows that have been canceled but I would like to see more of (i.e. Almost Human). They are also expanding into multiple genres, so it is not a stretch that they could have a couple dozen shows under their control every year. I guess it will just be even more fodder to fuel the disagreements between Netflix and the existing content creators/providers.

They picked up Longmire after A&E cancelled after last season. I like that they have "saved" a few shows.

Four should be the new Marvel series. Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist.

Daredevil should be wrapping up filming or just about to last I heard. They already cast Cage and Jones. Iron Fist has been pretty silent though.

I am surprise the super hero theme has lasted sooo many years. Dare I say it is mainstream nerdness now.

Yeah, and I was glad to hear this. That is one of the few shows I followed. (on Netflix).

Really it is one of the very few that is about 'down to earth' people doing the right thing in difficult times.

Unlike most shows about neurotic Hollywood types doing drugs when faced with challenges.

The renewed Arrested Development was pretty good, though half the cast really wasn't putting much effort into their parts. Season 8 of Trailer Park boys was really good, I expect Season 9 to be just as good too.

If they're going to be reviving shows; then maybe, just maybe Firefly could live again!
I'm allowed to dream...

Wonder if they'd ever think of taking on the budget for remastering new shows? Netflix broadcasts pretty much everything in HD, yet have a lot of content in SD, still, as it simply never got released in HD.

Closest analogy would be to their season 6 of the Clone Wars, where Netflix isn't actually doing any work outside of 'funding it', but...ST:DS9? Babylon 5? Yeah....

I'm with ya' but it would not be the same without the original cast.

I don't see the issue.

Name of the series, after all, is 'Firefly'...the class of ship they were flying. So tell the story of the crew of another Firefly-class ship in a new season, instead of the Serenity's crew.

It'd be an interesting way to mix things up, keep the story new.

maybe they can make it actually good. still havent been able to bring myself to finish watching the single season of firefly, and ima sci-fi buff. Its an endless ripoff of so many other shows w/horrrrible acting.

Although I personally don't agree with it being an endless rip-off with bad acting...even if it was, does it matter if it's enjoyable to watch?

I can't tell if you're trolling or not...

Not bad. They usually do decent quality work. Not all have to be expensive scripted shows, I'm guessing a lot will be cheap-to-produce realityTV like shows.

They're evolving, which is good. They're essentially trying to create their own premium network.

While I would love to see Firefly come back, they did kill off two main characters. Sure they could continue without them, but I don't think it would be the same.

i got forced into watching 3 episodes of bojack horseman, because it was fucking amazing.
it was boring and simplistic as fuck to me, i didnt laugh once. the jokes are too too obvious, or just surprise!; sex or potty reference. (omg the cat likes catnip!, they said the word clitoris, the bunny is eating carrots, the dog is drinking from a dog bowl, huehuehuehuehuehuehue) zzzzz
i liked orange the new black and house of cards, and expected way better, but yuck.

What is Netflix's definition of "original series"? I am seeing tons of shows with this label that are not original at all. I know some of them they just extended a season for, but others are just imported from overseas or something. When I see "original series" I expected House of Cards/Orange is the New Black material.

lilyhammer is pfuckin good and id say its definitely original.

I hope they can keep up the quality of them, so far they have had some excellent shows.

LIlyhammer (the first and imo it needs more recognition, it's a great show).
House of Cards
Orange is the new black
Hemlock Grove (first season was meh but second season was a lot better imo).
Peaky Blinders (just started to watch this the past week and I'm loving it).

Also they have the new Marco Polo show starting tomorrow.

Seet his is what I'm talking about, Peaky Blinders is not an original series by Netflix, they simply picked up the distribution rights from the BBC to rebroadcast it. IMO there's a difference between a show that Netflix actually produced, like house of cards, and a show they simply purchased the rights to air like Peaky Blinders. It seems like most of the "original series" shows fall into the second category.

I tough orange is the new black was ok
could not get into House of cards (maybe I should have gave that show more then 2 eps ?)

But even if I dont like the show its a very good thing that netflix is looking to produce more stuff.
Maybe once they show success (and I'm sure they will) others will follow and the cable cartel will finally die !

What did you expect from an animated show? It does get better / deeper in later episodes if that's any consolation.

Just my opinion but you could be a bit too critical... This type of stuff is done all the time. We just don't know about it. While yes most companies have both distribution and production arms, not all of their shows were produced by them. I believe shows that switch networks were probably produced by a 3rd party and distributed/aired by the various companies. Just because of the fact a company doesn't want to sell their hard work to competitors. It happens just not as often. I admit not a expect on how TV production works.

I believe Netflix is also inherently a different service. Previously known to basically be "syndicated" only provider. Their "Original" advertising is probably a bit heavy handed because they have to break the notion that Netflix doesn't have any thing exclusive/original and only shows old/syndicated reruns basically.

I see where netflix is going... and while I would have been happy with a higher cost more content service. This alternative is good too, more unique shows for low(ish) cost is a good thing.

Peaky Blinders it he only one on that list that isn't funded/made via Netflix.

The old school broadcasting networks, the RIAA, etc should be taking notes. This is what's going to drive them under in the future.

i do hope they pick up Revolution from NBC.

They ended it like shit , middle of the story , and the best part was to come.

On your list, but if you look at most of the Netflix Originals they are not original. I just dont understand why they are labeling them like this. I put more effort into watching their truly original series so that their viewer metrics look strong an encourage them to make more original shows.
