Ubiquiti networks edge router v1.6 is out

There was no mention of me. Wait, I don't have one of these :p

In addition to the features added (seems like they did a lot of IPv6 work on this one) there are also a lot of package updates that address major CVEs (POODLE, ShellShock, etc). A very good update

I really like how Ubiquiti interacts with the community during development.

On the EdgeRouters, yes. On other product lines, not so much. Cough Toughswitch Cough. mFi is pretty much dead. Flopping around with the latest switches/plugins. The Unifi line could use more developers on it and they need to ditch Java and come out with mobile apps for it.

This.

The toughswitch is a dead product also no matter how much they say its still active.

Yeah... just bought 3 more for another 2 wireless deployments. They work fine for what we need them to so I don't have too many complaints about them.

Works great for me and my clients.

It is a very solid economical managed PoE switch.

What do you guys have issues with in simple environments?

0 for a simple environment.. but there are issues with the switch that is logged at the official site.

Anyways back to the OP.

I upgraded to 1.6 last night. Seems to be good so far.

1.6 updated core components, fixed IPv6 stuff, cleaned up and improvement the VPN page and streamlined many items in the gui.

The important part was "new framework" without breaking everything/anything else.

1.7 I'd expect more gui improvements, VPN improvements and a couple of other low hanging items that haven't been attended to.

I have been looking into the EdgeRouter for some time now. Currently running a custom pfSense box. How fast do they usually push out updates?

You can see the firmware update history here (Platform is EdgeMAX):

I was on the fence for a long time about building a DIY router box, at one point considering a pcengines.ch box and installing pfSense. The EdgeRouter Lite turned out to have all features I wanted in a router box, it was relatively inexpensive and it is Linux based which I preferred.

Every quarter or so. They have beta versions that are released even more frequently.

I was using a Cisco 3825 then I switched over to a virtual pFsense instance briefly but then ultimately decided that the ERL would be the way to go as its low power, didn't have to rely on my ESXi hosts (pfSense) and supports everything that I need.

I just bought another ERL-3 for my parents house to replace their crappy Linksys router. Dropping that in along with a UniFi AP this weekend.

Ya - I have been having a hard time thinking moving to ERL-3 over my current setup. It is a mini computer with external power (cannot draw more than ~100w) that runs a dual core Atom with 4gigs of memory and 30gig SSD.

Guess I will do more research and actually ask an old co-worker of mine if I can borrow his spare ERL to toy with.

ERL3 uses less than 12W. Mine is currently at 7.7W.

Setup is a bit different vs pFsense or even a Cisco, but if you are strong with CLI then you won't have any problems.

With the newer firmware versions, more and more features are being added to the GUI. I didn't even have to touch the CLI on my last couple of installs. Its still really nice to have the option to if I want it though.

Says my ERL. I will keep trying. UBNT forums show a little chatter about unresponsive ERLs post flash, so I am a little hesitant since I've been ok on 1.5.

I had that same problem, you should be able to find the solution on the forum.

I think I had to delete the temp files, then wget the new firmware right onto the device.

Memory exhaustion. Reboot the router and then try.

Fixed after a simple reboot. It was up for nearly 3 months, as long as I've had the thing.
