Google has announced Drive for Education, an upgrade from Google Apps for Education service.

Drive for Education will be available to all Google Apps for Education customers at no charge and will include:
  • Unlimited storage: No more worrying about how much space you have left or about which user needs more gigabytes. Drive for Education supports individual files up to 5TB in size and will be available in coming weeks.
  • Vault: Google Apps Vault, our solution for search and discovery for compliance needs, will be coming free to all Apps for Education users by the end of the year.
  • Enhanced Auditing: Reporting and auditing tools and an Audit API easily let you see the activity of a file, are also on the way.

Even more data for Google to snoop through. I'll stick with 3rd party, personally.

I'd rather spend the money on more of my own personal space than upload any of my files to some server. The sky will fall eventually. The clouds are always plotting our demise to begin with.

Not sure where you're getting unlimited capacity hdd's/ssd's for free but I want one!

Personally I'd rather get a NAS device for home. Don't trust anything important stored on the Internet.

Nothing is free on Google. The price you pay in the long term is very dear.

On another note, does anyone know when ProtonMail.ch will officially launch?

Silly people thinking Google won't 'eventually own' anything you put on their storage and don't 'update in X days' lol

next up the faparamappening, college edition, in 3...2...1...

This will be excellent for the school I work at.

Sure - we only have about 120 students but our school are investing heavily into Google Education and this is a nice boon to our transition to a digital workflow.

Where is Google getting theirs for free? Don't tell me little banner ads that much of the time are blocked are cutting it.

And I'm not generating unlimited data, anyway.

"Google is just machine scanning and anonymizing it for ad purposes"

And the "NSA is looking just for terrorists".

Google have really taken a page out of Apple's marketing of yesteryear to shape their upcoming clients and are pushing it even further then Apple did with Chromebooks for all students, free space, and supporting education.

Worked very well for Apple, so it makes sense Google is trying it also.

I have to admit, having seen and used what Google is doing it works very, very well and schools seem to really like it.

I wonder how many students have a need for 5TB single file sizes

Exactly. No limit, no questions asked, huge file sizes... sounds like the perfect place for students to store all their illegal downloads.

Sounds good to me ;) and my collection of home movies. Always good to spread out the information. Redundancy.

I was getting a little excited being that I have an .edu email address (well actually 2) but it appears it will be harder than that to get the unlimited storage.

But only for students right now so unless you've got like some kinda educational affiliations, it maybe won't help much for people who wanna give Google access to all their home movies.
