If you look at the image below, that is pretty much all the proof you need that Apple was aware of the iPhone bending issue before it shipped.

A Consumerist reader who works at one of these businesses forwarded us the above image taken from the most recent Visual/Mechanical Inspection (VMI) guide for the iPhone. And right there in the “Out-Of-Warranty” section is “Bent enclosure,” with a photo that looks a lot like some of the images people have been sharing online in recent days.

So build it less durable, make sure the defect (?) is not covered under warranty, and then people in that Apple ecosystem are forced to buy more phones = more profit.

Big business.

Yes, only the other day I was writing of the joys of Apple-product warranties, which seem cheap-as-all-get-out for devices of such quality (*cough*)...;) It's amazing, but there actually exist people who believe that crummy warranties are a sign of superior products because "the company knows that good warranties aren't needed because the quality of their products is so high." It is indeed remarkable, but there are actually people for whom that thinking is sound...;) [Never mind the obvious fact that if a product is well made then it will cost the company almost nothing to give it a super warranty, etc., boosting customer confidence and sales through the roof at the same time.]

I like the Apple reply "only 9 people have contacted Apple about bent Iphone 6 Plusses". How would it be this big of a story if there were only 9? All of them must have been journalists of some sort to get this much coverage.

Because hating on Apple is the new cool thing to do. Apple's stories do tend to get noticed a lot. Nobody cares that there has been bent Android phones for years. I would say the original iPhone probably had a problem with this as well, but it didn't get a reaction like this.

Because the media and people like the OP blow non-issues up into huge issues for no good reason.

Don't know why people are getting bent out of shape (pun intended), not crApple's fault.

People think the magic unicorn piss is strong enough to keep a super thin phone straight when put in their pockets that they don't realize you have to give up on something internally to cram all that hardware in there.

Why are the phones bending at all? Is this only happening to people wearing tight pants and/or overweight people making it bend?

They could use Titanium and make it that thin. It would just cost more so less profit than using soda cans.

I sort of disagree with this. Only a couple of people have beaten/knocked out their wife girlfriend recently yet that's all I hear about on the news Ray Rice/ NFL/ Commissioner Goodell, blah blah blah. The media will make a story out of 1 persons misfortune and blow it all out of proportion.

orrrr just maybe its up to Apple engineers to make the right design decisions? The fact that only 9 people have complained i can flat out gaurantee is absolutely bogus. I have counted more than 9 unique users on multiple different sites with the issue.

Apple mechanical engineers should have made the decision based on the thinness and the material that it was a poor design and could lead to this situation. Either piss poor shit engineering or piss poor marketing. Either one coming from this company wouldnt surprise me

Because my phone doesn't do this.

Breaks up with a tiny pressure.

Only it is not simply the material that is causing the bend. Some of you need to read this:

That's a good summary.

TLDR; They failed to provide adequate support. Samsung uses ribs in their design to counter bending, Apple apparently does not.

Look at the case part of the teardown. You can see the milling marks. It appears to be a flat case shape with lots of modules dropped in, but not milled out of the case.

Compare to Note 3:

Lots of various ridges.

To be fair to Apple, if you're spending the premium on the iphone anyway - you might as well pick up apple care. It's probably the only extended warranty that is ever worth buying. Once you do buy that - they will fix anything, for whatever reason - even if that reason is "I was a dumbass" I've brought in stuff and said "I was a dumbass and broke it" and they were like "oh you have apple care on this, you said what now? It magically did this overnight on it's own winky winky" and it was fixed.

They DO take very good care of apple care customers. At least here at my local Apple store.

Post of the day.
That was great! :D

Just buy an OTTER case...it will turn your iphone into an ugly thick as hell indestructible iphone.

I don't know maybe RTFA. Image featured in story is from 2012 and does not refer to or show an iPhone 6.

Breaks up with a tiny pressure.

Tiny pressure?

He basically rips the thing in half! On purpose!

Using his thumbs as a fulcrum putting MASSIVE pressure in the edges!

Not TINY!

I'm actually not shocked by his results. BUT... this is totally different than what would happen if the phone is just sitting in the pocket of your tight jeans.

I didn't watch any of the videos until now because I thought this was another overblown topic. Holy shit, the iPhone 6 is terrible.

Also, I can't fucking believe how strong the Note 3 appears to be. I take it the Tab S is probably just as durable. I remember one night I accidentally fell asleep on it and was freaking out when I woke up, ha ha.

apple also gets way more free coverage for releasing a new product then any other company in the world.

With the good comes the bad.

Once the phone is bent, even if the phone has an issue that IS covered by warranty, the phone will be considered out-of-warranty and the iPhone user will be OUT-OF-LUCK. See how that works? Amazing!!!

I did!

And it appears that the Note 3 can survive an attempt of being PURPOSEFULLY bent in half using TWO HANDS and A LOT of exterior force.

But are those normal everyday experiences?

Look... I get it... the iPhone 6 Plus isn't as strong as some other phones.

My advice is this: don't grab your iPhone with two hands and try to snap it in half. It will bend when you do that!

Seriously though, what kind of idiot sits on a $700 phone...or even a $200 phone. DON'T SIT ON YOUR PHONE. And I doubt its bending in peoples front pockets, even if they are skinny jeans.

Maybe I'm not an idiot, who knows. I don't baby my phones, but I don't fucking sit on them either, and I don't keep them in my pocket when sitting...but again, I don't think your front pocket will bend it while sitting.

Exactly. And whether or not one personally cares for the iPhone it is iconic and probably the hottest gadget on the planet. Both the good and the bad often get out of proportion.
