Seriously....Android fan.... iPhone user.

Been playing with dozens of phones and NOTHING is impressing me. When is someone going to come out with something that "wows" me?

:(

Phones are becoming like computers. No phone is going to wow you as the technology is maturing and improving by increments and refinements. 2014 is turning out to be a fairly dull year for phones so that isn't helping.

Just like computers, it's usually some feature (and not the phone as a whole) that wows you. Personally, I use my phone a lot for work and sometimes travel quite a bit for work. And I don't like using my work computer for personal stuff because of all the company loaded junk on it.

The two features that would be really useful are a good fingerprint scanner (I unlock my phone 10 + times a day) integrated with passwords (e.g. unlock lastpass) and a good battery life. I'm not an iPhone/IOS person, but guess which phone has both?

Windows Phone. Seriously. Check out the Lumia 1520 or HTC M8(for windows). The HTC M8 also has superior battery life(greater than 25%) over its HTC M8 for Android counterpart.

I'm looking forward to the new sony xperia z3 compact. As Phones keep getting bigger, I want to stay around what I have now. I am on a Nokia 920 with At&t.

The Note 4 is looking like the phone of 2014 from everything I have seen.

happy hunting.

**oops, At&t, not Tmobile.

Like was suggested, the market is stabilizing. At least right now, we're past the point where you can regularly expect gigantic leaps in performance and awesome new features that change how you use your device. Even the Galaxy Note Edge comes across more as Samsung's attempt to justify its curved display production than a sincere attempt to move the industry forward.

As for Windows Phone... well, that'd require more than the Lumia Icon and warmed-over versions of Android phones. And I hate to say it, but the "wow, this is different" factor is fading away. Microsoft needs to take an active interest in supporting high-end Windows Phone hardware if it wants to stand out.

Next year should bring a pretty big leap with 64bit androids and most likely Windows for phones, if not x86 for Windows.

The past two years are/were just more of the same with slightly improved hardware. Apple could have advanced further by not locking things down so much and adding 3 GB of RAM.

All phone OEM's be like:

I'm strongly leaning toward note 4. Unless it's just too big for you, what's not to like?

Touchwiz/bloat, very slow updates, locked/encrypted bootloader, and if the GS5 is any indication, no root for months on AT&T and Verizon.

Why has no one mentioned the LG G2/G3. Excellent phones, amazing bezel less design that gives you a bigger screen in same size as competition, a decent skin (better than TouchWiz, no lag), amazing battery life, and if care, bootloader unlock + root (unlike Samsung) and good XDA dev community.

HTC also has phones with great design, Sense 6 is very nice, and the best sound and speakers.

What specifically are you looking for?

Then get an htc one m8 or wait for the m9. I'm considering doing that

Yeah the lg G3 looks great too. Lots of good options.

The RAM I kinda agree on (2GB would probably have been fine, too), but have you noticed what's new in iOS 8? It's actually loosening up with elements like Extensibility. I don't think it's about to go laissez faire, but it's at least aware that apps need to be flexible and hook into other parts of the OS.

The hardware these days is mighty impressive. It's the software that is unimpressive. I feel like there's no apps worth downloading or keeping.

I have a Note 3 and I'm still trying to figure out why a video I just watched stated the Note 4 went back to USB 2.0. Anyone know why this would be? My Note 3 charges very fast and I thought that was a huge benefit specific to USB 3.0.

Confused.

That's what I did (got the M8) and am very happy with it.

Fast charging is not exclusive to USB 3.0 (that's restricted by other hardware and the charger you're using) , faster data transfer speeds are though. And it seemed that the fast data transfer mode of the Note 3 interfered with wireless connectivity (as notified when you enable USB 3 transfer mode on the phone) somehow and I'm guessing Samsung couldn't figure out a way to fix that, so they reverted back to USB 2. That's just my guess though.

Currently, I'm more than willing to wait for a phone with usb 3 type-c. Faster charging, more durable connections, etc. Why the heck would anyone still want this big ass micro usb 3 on your phone today?!?

Z2/3. I finally got the Z2 and it's easily the best overall phone. This is coming from a guy who buys and tries pretty much every flagship phone the last 4 years.

Are they coming out with a Z3 Ultra (6.4"+) this time around?

No idea -- though the absence of an announcement at IFA doesn't bode well. Sony is already bleeding cash because of its smartphone business, and a niche device like the Ultra might drain more cash than it makes.

tmobile only? or am I mistaken?

Z2 never came out on any carrier in the US. You have to import it or buy directly from the US Sony Store online or in one of their stores. Its on sale right now $580. Worth every penny though, Sony is doing a disservice to themselves and customers by not having it on carriers or maybe its the carriers who dont care. The Z2 can be summed up by better than Apple construction and premium feel, with top end Samsung like specs and minimal Motorola like software features. The Z2 looks big but its infinitely more comfortable to hold than the Note 3, the feel of the materials are wonderful, the feature set is 2nd to none and the sony skin on it is so minimal.

Sony has converted me to their phones, I should have bought the Z2 a long time ago. I was just hesitant because I had to import it then and I wasnt 100% on Sony so I got the Note 3 instead but now I have massive regrets getting the Note 3 instead of the Z2.

Good info here... but the z3 is tmobile only right? I couldn't consider a z2 when z3 is imminent

The Z3 is a very small incremental upgrade over the Z2. I just couldnt wait anymore and the fact that the Z2 dropped in price made my decision easier. I will probably get the Z3 depending on how my Note 3 holds up.

September 24 - Blackberry Passport is released. Even if you don't like BB, a 1:1 1440p screen with a touch enabled physical keyboard is at least different than the norm.

Maybe what I need.... I am NOT in the market to buy a new phone. That isn't why I made this thread. I am just wanting to pick SOMETHING up and go "WOW.... this is awesome."

It's been too many years since I've been "wowed" by mobile technology. :(

I was pretty impressed with my One M8 when I first got it the first time I fired up a video and some music. If you watch/listen to much media on your phone, those front facing speakers really do a lot to improve the experience of watching something on a (relatively) small 5" display. I really hope Samsung and other OEMs start picking up on this design because I'm really going to hate watching videos on my next phone if it doesn't have front facing speakers. It was always annoying to have to cup your hand around the speaker on my previous Note 2 in order to hear everything better.

Actually feel pretty happy with specs, don't care for bigger/more pixel screens, faster processors, etc. Just want a crazy good battery life in a small phone.

Was thinking the same. The OP gives no information on what he is looking for in a mobile device. Perhaps a "Glory Hole" accessory?

So what about current mobile tech impresses you?

There is nothing out there currently that I've picked up that puts a smile on my face. It's like we've reached the pinnacle of what a smartphone should be and someone needs to put something out that will blow us outta the water.
