Which ROG Laptop

Keep in mind the Asus is the DDR3 version of the GTX 850m and not GDDR5 (lol why? probably to save on costs due to sharing with the n550), performance difference is around 30% (?) I believe. 765m might even be faster at this point (albeit much less efficient), not sure off the top of my head at the moment.

To be honestly you have to first ask yourself whether or not you want a 17.3 inch laptop. I don't feel like anyone else can really tell you that.

Thank you for your reply and I did not know the memory difference that makes things even more interesting. I was trying to stay around the 15.6in mark so I can have mobility but currently the one I want in that size is out of stock and with the memory being ddr3 I may have to go with the 17 in.

Any other thoughts out there in Hardocp land???

Are you set on a RoG or Asus in general? Asus actually has the n550 which is a pretty similar laptop to the g550. The difference I believe is HD speed and glossy screen (touch?). Although from what I remember of seeing in the store the screen didn't seem like a highly reflective glossy? It also comes in slightly cheaper.

There's very few laptops using the 850m with GDDR5 at the moment. I believe only one Clevo model and one MSI model are? Dell hasn't refreshed that Inspiron 15 7000 yet and Lenovo moved to AMD for it's 14 inch model.

Considering the the DDR3 has less then half of the memory bandwidth the performance hit is quite lower then you'd expect. Performance isn't necessarily bad though for the DDR3 version (and it'll be much less power hungry than the 765m), browse some numbers and device for your self -
GTX 850m (look for the DDR3 laptops, most of them) - http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-850M.107795.0.html

Honestly at this point I'd try to get a Maxwell laptop if you can unless it's a very good deal. Kepler has been out for 2.5 years+ already and will be effectively end of life across all except maybe the lowest end soon with the upcoming 9xxm series and GM204 release. So maybe look around for a few GTX 860m laptops as well and see if anything looks good for you.

wow guys thanks for the info :) :) yea I like asus but I'm not set on them. I just want a desktop replacement that I can take with me. I'm currently traveling about 80% of the time and I'm missing my games lol. Thank you for the research material :) :) :)

If you're actually traveling about with it I'd try to see and handle a 17.3 inch in person at least before deciding on one. It'd be a better gauge then judging from paper specs for the size/weight difference.
