Hi all boys and girls, i recently bought from a friend an AMD R9 280X to replace my dead Nvidia GTX 660TI. I've asked in this forum and all recommended me to buy this card over a GTX 770, so, that being said how much performance may I receive over my good overclocked 660TI? was a worthwhile upgrade im still at time to return it but the price to upgrade over that card will be considerable..

Well I own both a 280x and GTX 770 and can tell you that they both are pretty much the same when it comes to most games. There are some that are more optimized for one or the other but overall pretty close. In terms of performance vs a 660ti, 10-15% sounds about right at 1080p with similar settings. The 280x does have 3GB of vram vs the standard 2GB you get from the GTX770 unless you were planning on the 4GB version so that's definitely an upside.

thanks for the answer, even if its a overclocked 280X it come to stock 1100mhz turbo clock and i probably will overclock it more. ahh yes i forgot to say i play at 1920x1080P trying to get as much FPS as possible as i game with a 144hz capable monitor.

i've swapped one of my machine cards (again.. :D) so im using right now in my personal machine a 280X Gigabyte windforce OC Rev 2. but my overclocked 660TI was much higher at 1254mhz stable ingame. in general in the games i've tested so far (metro Last light, Batman Arkham City, Tomb Raider) the performance from the 660TI to the 280X was at minimum 30%. all games tested at 1920x1080:

i can post images later if you want.. i have for each bench.. i hope that can help you, im downloading right now 3dmark suite to test this card.. but in general your jump will be a little greater due to my card being a bit more overclocked..

I would think the 280x would be pretty fast compared to the 660Ti as my R9-280 seems to have a different voltage setup then the 7950 had as it runs at 1.256 and seems to be a nice overclocker as this was 1150/1500 on air without touch the voltage as I think AMD used the 280 as a test bed for 285..

yes i was impressed with the numbers i was getting even with the overclocked 660TI.. I thin the big change here its the bandwidth and ROPS because raw numbers aren't so different, i knew it was a stronger card because i was using since a long time in one secondary machine but that have a stronger processor and faster RAM thats why i wanted to test in my personal machine with same settings and configuration as the 660TI.. results greater than expected..

Infinite thanks Araxie now I see Why this forum its highly recommended, I bought the card and im really pleased with this card, im just wondering how hot should these cards run in high load gaming? Im seeing What I consider are high temps, under hard gaming like Hitman absolution or far cry 3 the card are in about 70-74, how good or bad are those temps taking into consideration the card its running maxed at 99% usage with vsync off... are they safe in the long term usage?

@macristina
you should have waited a lil bit more the prices of graphic card have come down

she made a thread in the video cards section to explain why the upgrade to 280X and why she wasn't able to buy anything higher than that in that time.. the 280X its a great card for 1080P@60hz..
