Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 Teardown

Seeing that Samsung phone screen makes me wonder if we'll eventually see support for other phones by simply sliding them in. I'm guessing not any time soon because it would require the phones to have their fancy bits more accessible and it would increase the weight, but looking at the Google cardboard thing it does seem like a possibility or at least support for other screens; maybe they pop-off of phones in the future.

Either way, it's cool to see the simplicity in design here. Can't wait to try out VR.

I wouldnt think so simply because the gyros in the Rift are more sensitive then you would ever need in a phone.

It would be awesome if we can just put a Note 4 screen on it. I think they will be 1440p

I meant only using the screen of your phone, not the gyros... ok, now I'm hungry :(

Now all that's left is to see if the DK2 can handle a Note 4 screen drop in for a resolution bump. :)

This seems terribly incomplete. They should have listed the electronic components, then checked to see if any of them were available separately, and last but not least, priced out the components they could buy and noted the ones they can't buy (separately, at least.) The video gave the false impression that all of these components are readily available right off the shelf, but they don't seem to have actually checked to see if that was the case. Pretty sloppy job, imo.

This is a dev kit, and they are jointly working with Samsung helping them with there VR product, so this doesn't really surprise me.

Yea they definitely need more pixels because the screen door effect is still noticeable. I met a guy at E3 who worked for some company on their occulus conversion team and he said the retail version would be > 1080p so I'll hope he's right. Considering LG put a 1440p screen up in their new phone, I don't see why this thing couldn't have 1440p next year when it releases.
