Wait...normally anything labeled "government-grade" is crap. So does this mean we have nothing to worry about? :D

"Government-grade" malware, which lurks in computer systems undetected for long periods of time, is believed to be in the hands of hackers using it to make rootkits and ransomware more potent. According to security researchers at Sentinel Labs, malware originally created for the purpose for government espionage, dubbed Gyges, is now undergoing a transformation as hackers are using the software to make their own rootkits and ransomware more sophisticated and harder to detect.

Gee... I never.. ever saw this coming. Nope.. not ever...

Yes the sarcasm is strong in this one.

Pen and paper for sensitive things is starting to look better and better. Russians can't get into that.

If it can be programmed, it can be hacked/infected.

Modularizing is a pretty smart idea. Add this to auto recompiling and you have a very effective malware program.

With auto recompiling and some randomization, you can have thousands of variants within a very short amount of time. No way any anti-virus or anti-malware company is going to be able to keep up with that.

The majority of people have been blind to the fact that security is pretty much just a facade.

Well, normally, government stuff is crap, but some parts of the government are actually managed correctly, if the motive is to increase the power of those in power. So, the CIA and NSA have actually developed some very potent software, just like DARPA develops some very nice technology and the FBI does do some very good investigating.

We're not talking about the IRS, where they can't even keep track of employee emails, or the EPA where they apparently have toilets so bad people have to crap in the hallways, or NASA where they have to promote pseudoscience in order to get any funding.

Time to change the bios and what the ever to stop rootkits from being possible if you have access and own a machine.

As much as the idea of this coming from spy tech the other side of the problem is wintel making PCs that I can't fully control when I paid for it.

Let's hand health care over to these professional expert government folks. No chance our health records will be compromised or anything.

Let the CDC file it away next to the smallpox

Brinksmanship 101

The malware also uses a hooking bypass technique that exploits a log bug in Windows 7 and 8, both x86 and x64 versions

Glad my Chromebook will be safe so I won't be needing help from here..

So much said with so few words. Fantastic post sir.

Actually, that's exactly what the Russians have done.
Also, I don't think we have to worry about the Russians... *cough* NSA *cough*

I wonder why governments bother with with the notion of "moral high ground" anymore. Won't they just drop the pretense in the same way that AT&T, EA and Comcast have?
