I wish It was....maybe the upgrade will be cheaper then the full install really don't want to pay 200.00 again for a OS that just came out in 2012.

oh God of Troll... not AndreRio again.. HE'S BACK!!..

When Windows 8 came out MS had an offer to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro Upgrade (which you can also use for clean installs) for $40 for a short while.. Complete ISO download of Windows 8 Pro and legit key from MS. I'm sure they will have similar when Windows 9 comes out. I jumped on the $40 deal rather quickly. beat the hell out of paying $200

Oh and OP isn't totally trolling. There has been rumors swirling for a bit now of Windows 9 being free, or having a free edition.

Yeah, I've been wondering about it myself in an older forum post here. Not a troll question. I would like it to be a free update for Win8.1u2 users, and if not, heavily discounted upgrade.

hehe for the amount of fail in Windows 8 Microsoft ought to be offering Windows 9 upgrades for Windows 8 users for free.

All right then, if Microsoft starts offering Windows for free, how will they continue to make money? Become a hardware company like Apple? This is hardly convincing, with Windows Phone market share declining from 5% to 3%, and Surface market share maybe hitting 1% this year.

You have a good point.

If we're talking about upgrades for end users, that's never been a huge business for Microsoft.

OEM and business licenses. Which is pretty much how they make money now. Joe Shmoe home user coughing up $200 for their OS is a drop in the bucket of their revenue stream.

Yes, but the OP doesn't post any new sources or anything like that in his usual typical troll fashion.

Why would it be free?

People hated vista so when they launched 7 microsoft made bank from people rushing out to upgrade. (Even though it's practically the same OS)

Same thing will happen when 9 is launched.

Windows is now being made available for free for devices with screens measuring 9" and smaller: http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/2/55...ndows-free-on-devices-with-screens-under-nine

This technically makes Windows cheaper to implement than Android for a lot of OEMs.

Eh? Global Windows Phone market share is up, not down

OK let me rephrase that. Why would a version of windows 9 that anyone cares about be free?

I think you have a point. Windows' dominate position on desktops and laptops does make it easier for Microsoft to charge for those form factors, especially is Windows 9 has a popularity that rivals 7's. But the low end of the price spectrum, Microsoft has to have something to stay competitive in pricing against things such as Chromebooks. However, as slow as Windows 8.x's adoption has been, Chromebooks have fared much worse.

Windows with Bing SKU. Push their search stuff with ads, and they make money that way.

At least it's a free version. With strings attached.
