AMD Catalyst 14.6 Beta

I haven't seen anything drastic change in AMD's drivers since 2008.
They work. CCC looks the same. My performance never really drastically improves or gets worse. I don't have flickering screens, mouse cursor corruptions, none of that.

So boring.
It got to the point with my 5870 where I went about a year without updating my drivers.

Depends upon what games you play and what card generation you have, I suppose. Some recent games have actually required newer drivers, to play. Others have definitely shown issues with older drivers, even though there isn't an actual enforced requirement to update.

AMD's HD7 series had lots of improvements in 2012 (finally fixed wide issue with inconsistant GPU utilization) and 2013 (major improvement in frame times). For that matter, most AMD cards had huge frame timing improvements, in 2013. and I've regularly seen newer games get some notable performance improvements stated in driver release notes.

Random video BSODs seem back with these for me. I've gotten a couple so far since these released.

Intensive gaming for hours? Yawn. Dare to seek a flash video? System instantly up in flames.

I've got the same issue, really annoying me, gonna try a clean clean install

Did this and working fine so far, tried about 10+ vids to make sure, just express uninstalled through CIM and then re-installed 14.6

14.6's are working fine for me too. Just installed over the previous drivers. No BSOD's or other issues. Also didn't notice a performance jump in the games I'm playing right now either. Currently playing the new Wolfenstein, TF2, and Pinball Arcade.

I could understand no visible difference in the latter 2 games, it doesn't take much to run them, but I was hoping for a little extra in the 1st one.

I know this will not effect that many folks but this driver breaks the PowerDVD12 Windows Media Player plug in. :( I just get a black screen when the movie is playing. If you start PowerDVD12 outside of Media Payer it works as it should.

I will never use CrossFire because of AMD's poor support.
Which is a shame because I could snag another 7970/280x for like $150.

I have nothing but awesome things to say about my 6970 crossfire experience. If I get the opportunity to grab another 290x for a reasonable price, I'll be all over it.

It seems that my problems with 14.6 are gone after using DDU and reinstalling , no more D3:roS screen freezes. nevermind

In my experience Crossfire support has improved a lot since the last time I tried it with a 4870x2, scaling has been improved greatly and most of the time it just works. No major complaints for me using 290 CFX. Sure, some newer games (Watch Dogs) don't support it properly, but that game isn't exactly working well on NV hardware either.

Was getting a lot of "Display driver has stopped responding..." messages with 14.6.
All of them occurred (as far as I can recall) while playing a youtube / flash video.

It's not a BSOD but it was still enough to push me back to the trusty 13.12s.
I always use DDU / the standard cleaning methods for any driver but 14.6 did not play well regardless.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I have 3 screens. Left side: Samsung 24” 1920x1200 connected with hdmi. Center: Apple cinema display 30” 2650x1600 connected with DVI, Right: Dell 24” 1920x1200 connected with DP.
Whenever I try to set up an eyefinity group, the main screen goes down to 1920x1200. I have tried all different “modes” for running mixed res eyefinity, but same result. The 30” screen gets locked to 1920x1200.

Running 14.6 beta with one 290 card.

What you need to do when it ask you which desktop do you want to "base" or start the eyefinity group from. you need to pick the middle i.e your Apple Display, then from there it will go on to arrange the side ones.

I have almost the same setup as you with a Dell U3014 in the middle flanked by 2 smaller ones.

Any reason you arent running WHQL?

You never had a 7 series before the 12.11 update then. 7-10% improvement average was like getting a free upgrade to the card.

Though I suppose the CCC didn't look all that different, I don't ever really go into those settings. Obviously most driver updates aren't on that level but people with multi-monitor configurations have been complaining for ages so hopefully this will fix some of their issues.

This I will agree with, I always found the new games that I had bought an extra card to play well never were supported till after I was almost done playing the game, and I had to usually "trick" the drivers into using a different profile which met with varied results. Plus it doesn't work in windowed mode =/

Tried this again now, still the same. I create a new group selecting my 30" first, then 3:1 setup and on the next step it shows my 30" as no 1 and pulls the resolution down to 1280x800 actually.
Pictures below shows what I am stuck with.
Afterwards, when I try to set my 30" as preferred display, it still shows my left 24" as the preferred display.

What kind of connection do you have to your apple display?

14.4 made some flash videos crash to BSOD, reverting to 13.12 fixed that again. Commonly reported by 79** users, wondering if this has addressed the issue.. no mention though.

HTML5 video from youtube used to cause BSODs for me, I haven't had one yet since installing 14.6.

I went from 13.12 to 14.6 beta. It broke Flawless Widescreen for me in Call of Duty Ghosts. It would crash to the desktop right after I launched it with Flawless Widescreen running.
I dropped down to the 14.4 drivers and it is fine now.

I was hoping it would enable me to run my center 1920x1080 monitor in native mode instead of stretching it to equal the 2 side 1680x1050 monitors.
I saw no option to change the center monitor from 1680x1050 to the native 1920x1080 mode in Eyefinity with the 14.6 beta drivers.

14.4 have been horrible for me. ever since i installed 14.4 ive been experiencing blue screens especially with flash/youtube. Not sure if I trust this beta because 13.12 and 13.9 have been great

Black and blue screens have been pretty much non existent for me after I switched from Chrome to Firefox. Both for 14.4 and 14.6

I am starting to wonder if you have a defective memory module on one of your cards..
You and me both but my 5970 did the same kind of stuff as did my 7970 cards. It seems like there is always something ify with AMD drivers and the desktop with my monitor setup anyway. Disabling crossfire seems to help and older drivers did not do this. When I had the 7970s on a new X79 motherboard it did stuff like this and random lockups that they did not tell anyone about or fix for about a year. Support and everyone else had me swapping power supplies and RAM and motherboards. So now I have their first bridgeless crossfire cards and a new X79 motherboard. You think they would test this stuff but... :)

I do wonder sometimes if the driver updates are fixing bad runs of cards that have issues with certain amounts of RAM being used or the GPU in certain ways.

Something is defiantly up with the 14.6 driver. It’s pushing the RAM harder in some way. Before 14.6 I could run my RAM at 1400MHz or more but after 14.6 I must lower it to 1350MHz to stop the random lines or artifacts in games and the desktop. Nothing I benched seemed to be improved by increasing the RAM speed anyway so no big loss there but AMD is doing something different with the RAM that is showing its weakness.

At the time I did not think I was over clocking but I had been using a saved base profile after reinstalling the driver each time that had the RAM clock at 1450 I think. Anyway, with the RAM above 1350MHz and using the old driver no issue, use 14.6 and I get the artifacts.

Same here. It's more likely that something changed with powertune and it's starving the RAM a little bit more.

i havent had any blue screens after downgrading to 13.12. I did not want to mess with 14.6 just in case but I can tell you 14.4 was awful I had at least 2 blue screens a day for a few days. At first i thought it was hardware related so I checked everything then did a google search and found many people having 14.4 issues.

AMD needs a better driver team
