$1.2B in losses? I think the Walkman was still in style the last time this company posted a profit. I wish I was kidding. :(

Sony has attributed the change to unforeseen expenses associated with its exit from the PC market, which it announced in February. Evidently, the company's PC sales - both those in the fiscal year ended in March and those expected in the next fiscal year - were lower than it expected even three months ago.

Maybe Sony should sell there movie studio or Spiderman to Marvel for a hefty chunk of money lol

have they still not figured out the harder they squeeze the people that give them money, the LESS they will get overall?

If they stopped spending all their money on lawyers to sue little old ladies and 10 year old kids... they'd probably have some more money.

Marvel/Disney would be happy to have this license back in their possession, and it would make me happier for an Avengers 3 film when they fight Thanos. Considering both Spideys and Wolverines involvement in that fight in the comics.

This I would be happy to see.

Sony needs to stop spending all their money on proprietary shit nobody cares about.

I'm not sure exactly what Sony is doing wrong, but they have sold off office building, manufacturing plants, Square Enix shares, entire divisions of the company, have had massive layoffs and they still can't even break even.

Sony's market cap is currently around $17.5B with a brand value of $6.6B and ranked #80 on Forbes most valuable brands (#547 in market value)

Nintendo's market cap is currently around $14.3B with a brand value of $8.0B and ranked #63 on Forbes most valuable brands (#684 in market value)

Microsoft's market cap is currently around $234.8B with a brand value of $56.7B and ranked #2 on Forbes most valuable brands (#10 in market value)

Most sites have fanboys for one or the other. I have all the consoles and enjoy parts of them all and enjoy PC gaming too. My thoughts are Nintendo is doing pretty well (not as well as a few years ago but still well) and focus on one market, gaming. Sony is really hurting, their most successful brand is PlayStation and it isn't nearly enough to make the company as it exists today to be profitable. Microsoft has a crazy amount of money, even is Xbox division isn't doing well it really doesn't matter. They don't lose enough on that division to really even care about it and the loses can be justified as a way for them to have a continued presence in the living room with hopes of opening other markets to them in the future. Microsoft basically has enough cash to buy Sony and Nintendo is they were really inclined to do so. So for everyone saying Xbox is doomed do you really think MS cares?

Sony, this is a great idea!

Giants rise and giants fall eventually. It's the nature of all things in this universe.

You missed a $100 billion there, Microsoft's market cap is at $334B.

I can't help but think that the BD vs. HD-DVD wars are partially to blame for Sony's financial condition. It is no question that Sony sunk a tremendous amount of resources into the war.

I can't think of one SONY product I'd like to own other than a PS.
All their electronics are kinda meh; TV, meh; Audio, meh....etc, meh

I used to think of Sony as quality, but have since lost that mindset. What really made me limit Sony products was the rootkit fiasco.

You know its bad when Sony's old knock-off company Vizio becomes better in quality, and I happily own a E390-A1 Vizio ;)

Sony's move to mainstream was one of the biggest strategic planning mistakes any company has ever made. Sony's speakers and amps are now laughable to anyone with even slightest amount knowledge. They try to sell their TVs at a somewhat premium price, but don't offer the features, aesthetics, or most importantly pq as the competition. They never jumped on the mobile bandwagon and have completely missed the biggest market for electronics manufacturers.

There was a time when you could build a complete Sony entertainment system and be the envy of everyone who saw it. It's similar to Bose, who also makes utter garbage now, although Bose has been smart enough to convince the uninformed consumer they are still top tier.

don't forget the headphones. they were never top of the line compared to sennheiser, akg etc, but now they sound like if you were locked inside a garbage container with a volksempfänger cranked up to eleven.

I can think of at least one. These are not on their main consumer site, but the Sony SS-AR series is really good, but also really expensive, like 20-30K. They compete with other speakers in that price range.

The problem is only the 80's business man who still respects Sony would invest that much money into Sony tower's with all the other options out there.

Never thought of Sony headphones as high-end. More of a the Apple earbuds of the 80's-90's. The monitor's tried to be nice, but was never impressed.

Expected losses since this is the fiscal year of paying for a shitload of components for PS4s and increasing output the best they could, but not additional losses.

Sony needs to drop the segments that have been bleeding for years and years. What are the profitable parts again?

Movies, PlayStation, Financial Services and Phones?

Really sony should just dump their hardware division, keep it to IP content, games and insurance and they'd probably be profitable.

Lets see...
Sony phones?
Not available on most carriers in the US.
Sony TVs?
Inferior quality, Premium price.
Sony Laptops/ PCs?
Average quality, Higher prices.
PS3?
Sold at a loss.
PS4?
Makes money.
Sony Music?
Bad PR, Terrible artists (Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus) or dead and not producing anything new (Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash).
Sony Audio?
Terrible, terrible, terrible and overpriced.

I'll take my 10 million dollar consultant fee, hell, I'll take 500k.
There's whats wrong, fix it or sell it off.

I totally forgot how well regarded Sony TVs (Trinitron/WEGA) and audio (Sony Sports/Walkman) used to be. The rivalry with Panasonic sure resulted with same amazing products from both companies over the years. Makes me sad to think about it now.
