Once again our friends north of the border are getting hosed by console price hikes. Sony has increased the price of the PS4 by $50, peripherals by $5 and games by $10 in order to "respond to changes in the market environment." :(

Sony Computer Entertainment Canada confirmed Friday that the price of the PS4 in Canada will rise $50, from $399.99 to $449.99, effective Saturday. The price of the DualShock 4 controller and PlayStation Camera will each rise $5 to $64.99.

I know they didn't specifically state that the lower CDN dollar was responsible for the price increase I will still address it. The CDN dollar was higher than the USD for how long? where was the price cut then? Retailers always gouge when the CDN goes lower and never give customer a break when it is higher.

Well the Canadian dollar dropped 10% relatively quickly from parity with the US dollar, and according to analysts will continue to drop for a good while yet.

Just looks like Sony is readjusting their prices. I expect other to do the same.

Unfortunately.... :(

This is the manufacturer upping prices by the sounds of it, not the retailers. Retailers can raise/lower prices anytime they want and don't need an excuse but competition ultimately keeps them in check over the long term. Where was the price cut before when the dollar was high you ask? Well it was in the initial lower price of $399.

They made the ps4 less enticing in canada by being the only console manufacturer to hike price. 450 is a barrier i wouldnt cross for now. Ill wait for a price drop.

Pay 500$ , get an xbox one and titanfall AND kinect. Pay 450 and get no game and just a console . Did they give an edge to the xbox? i think so.

Here's where are the trash commentary about a lower dollar being good for Canada's economy comes to an end...

I was thinking I might buy ps4 this year, now I've changed my mind.
It's ok Sony, if you don't want my money I won't give it to you.

You're forgetting the yearly fee to XBOX Live.

Sit at $1.10 and the price is the same.

Sit at $0.90 and the price goes up by 25% It really all makes so much sense.

It is probably for the better, since we are a global seller. I'm pretty sure PS4 prices don't have a huge impact on Canada's economic policy. At the end of the day our dollar sitting closer to 85 cents is better for our economy, it results in a disproportionate increase in trade income over the increased cost of imported goods, ie: prices go up but national income goes up more.

Being priced at $399 CAN meant the system was actually cheaper than in the US. Raising it to $449 CAN puts it in line with inflation and the price is now comparable to the US.

CAN were getting a deal for the past 4 months.

Nothing to be seen here other than the value of the CAN dollar dropping.

Wow that sucks. First you wake up in your igloo, realize a polar bear ate all your maple syrup last night, you're totally out of firewood even though you lumberjacked all week and have to burn your hockey sticks for warmth, have to deal with enough America envy as it is, and then Sony goes and price hikes your whole country. I keed!

the console price isn't a big deal.. but what is the big deal are the games...

10 dollar increase to games is INSANE and everyone knows it won't go back down either...

Games have actually gotten cheaper alone, and even more with inflation. For example in 1996 when Super Mario 64 came out it was $69.99 USD. Today that's $104.35.

We really can not complain at all about the price itself.

Don't feel bad, I get a letter in the mail every summer or 2 saying the price of electricity or gas is going up because there is a heightened demand during the excess heat. Guess what I don't get come winter...in fact guess what I have NEVER got

I thought the yearly fee is required to play online. Don't know about Netflix though.

By your logic, we Europeans pay 400€ - about US$557. You Americans are paying too little and Sony should increase prices in your region.
Now, seriously, this is a mistake by Sony and should correct it right away. If they respond to changes they must do it globally even in Europe (price drop immediately).

that's still nothing compared to the 1:1 exchange rate they assume for the EU even though the euro exchange rate is around 1.39 dollars per euro. VAT my ass, that doesn't account for 39% price difference.

The reason the canadian dollar went down is cause Canada is trying its hardest to destroy its deficit, which right now sits at 1 trillion dollars, which has been doing down tons

Then lets take the states, which has 9x the canadian population, which is sitting on 17.1 trillion dollars of debt last I checked, worst of all was something like 40% of that said debt was owed by companies OUTSIDE of the states doing business in it, which could at any moment tell the states to screw off and not pay them

Also, I didn't see Sony lowering the price of the PS4 when our dollar was $1.14 vs the american dollar

All console companies are shit, I avoid them all

Really the CAN dollar is 442 us dollars. So the numbers add up. What doesn't add up is the cost of a PS4 in Australia. $550 AUS = $500 USD. The game/console/electronic/pc parts etc all overcharge Australians by a large margin. When AUS is closer, cheaper to ship too and the population is densely located on the east coast. But because your AUS we are surcharging you extra. The Canadian Dollar actually makes sense, but because they rip people of elsewhere I can't condone their pricing.

Talk to the Australian government.

Sitting at 685 billion right now, we've had two fiscally sound governments in a row now. Harper even stayed calm during the banking disaster, I may not like his social policy but his government gets credit where credit is due.
