What do you think of Mozilla's latest idea? Good? Bad? Meh? Thanks to benzino_86 for the heads up.

This mock-up from Mozilla shows how it plans to incorporate sponsored sites into its New Tab page, an attempt to make it more useful for new users while making a few bucks on the side, too. Sites shown are not actual partners on the Directory Tiles project.

Opera does this allready.

And Chrome might as well do this with how much it promotes google shit over other sites.

I run an addon that replaces my "New Tab" page anyways so it's "meh" to me unless they stop addons from blocking them.

Also if people actualy read the aritcle they will see that ads will only be in blank squares, so once you start visiting sites they will get replaced, or you could click the x and remove them.

If it can get Mozilla away from Google funding then w/e thats fine. I fear that Google will pull the plug and kiss another browser goodbye off the market. There non-profit so atleast the money would actually go back into the product instead of lining the pockets of stock holders.

By default Firefox looks like this:

With your favirote sites in the squares, but when you first use firefox the squares are blank.

With this the squares will have default sites.

I did this thing. It's called move to Chrome. Firefox can suck it.

Good. I was just thinking the other day that one thing we all need is more fucking commercials in our lives.

I don't know about you, but I since haven't gone to the Blink-based Opera--and I won't until they give back all the functionality taken away: there are no ads in new tabs in Opera 12. Again: I'm not using the Blink-based one, so if you are: YMMV.

I hate all the ads when I'm watching "Ouch, my balls!" on TV. It seems like most places on the internet that don't sell a product or subscription model have to use ad revenue to make money. Consumers don't want ads, but they want the free product.

I say if they have an ad supported version, also have a paid version with no ads (and maybe more functionality). Not a lot of $$, of course.

I guess I will have a reason to move to chrome now.

Why? Because new users only will see some default sites when they first install Firefox and then only for the first time they use it?

And Chrome does this already, just it only promotes Google sites.

Meh. I'll never click them personally, however if it turns out to be a real invasive pain in the butt, there will be an extension to remove them; more than likely.

Why can't people just read the article?

They go away the moment you start browsing the internet.

Same here, less because I heard the new one was horrible (no idea tbh), moreso because I'm on v12 x64.

Methinks they'll never update x64 again, but as long as it still works I'll stay a fan

This.

Sounds like a pretty shitty business model then, because I don't know about you but I don't keep my Firefox open unless I'm browsing the internet with it.

The ads go away after the first time you use the internet. You can make them go away instantly and forever by clicking the small grid of blocks in the upper right corner of a new tab. I did because I just want blank white pages for my new tabs. This is a tempest in an empty beer can.

Yes, that is true, right now.

But what about the future? Mozilla's contract with Google, which currently pays them $300 Million a year, expires later this year. What happens if there's no new contract to provide Mozilla with truckloads of free money?

All of a sudden there's a new version of Firefox and those squares all have ads and you can't turn it off.

I love my opera v19. It does everything I need it to and has compatibility with a ton of extensions already available for the blink engine. I really don't understand the hate.

I don't know what's wrong with this. It seems incredibly un-intrusive. Which is fine by me.

Explains why they removed the option to not have tab browsing.

I wonder if they will block my ability to have tabs removed via an add-on.

\No tabs.
\\Old school type who likes things to open in their own windowed browser.
\\\Why am I using slashes?
\\\\ Mmm. Slashes...

And to think there was a day....before pop up ads, and Microsoft lawsuits, where Mozilla would give away this stuff....even at the cost of distribution.
