ok I need your help ive narrowed my choice to these two monitors

first off my needs, please bear with me.

ill never use 3d
my video card will do 60fps with max everything at 1080p but I wont be doing 120fps or 144fps
I don't want to hack my monitor to use 2d lightboost
I play all types of games and really want the best quality with the least lag, im not a competitive gamer I don't care what my kill ratio is in bf4 which is only one of my many games, rts, rpg, mmo etc.

So for general gaming use, non 3d, at 60fps please tell me would you recommend me getting the true 8bit ips or the super fast tn.

thanks for all whos helped me, I feel one of these monitors will suit my needs, and with your help ill get the right one

I'd get the IPS every time but I don't know if I'd get the PA248Q. There are faster IPS monitors around:

EV2336W
BenQ 2411T
ASUS PB248Q

Can't say for certain if they are all true 8bit but I own the EV2336W and its colours are as good as the Viewsonic VP2770 I had before it.

The PA248Q uses a grainy matte coating and uses LED PWM Dimming (Side Effects), the PB248Q and BenQ BL2411PT are much better. The PB248Q is not available in North America but the BL2411PT is in Canada and from NCIX US.

If you can't afford these then get the Dell P2414H which does not use PWM, is pretty good and costs <300$

The PA248Q offers absolutely nothing over these alternatives. The EV2336 is the best and has been on sale recently:

It really comes down to taste. 120~144hz monitors are being advertised as "true gaming monitors" so neophyte gamers assume that they "need" a high refresh rate TN panel.

Reality is much different. Personally, I'd take an IPS over a TN any time of the day, week, year or aeon. I find high refresh rate to be a neat gimmick far from anything resembling true necessity. And I'm heavily into Quake and have been for more than 10 years now so take that as you will. 60hz is absolutely fine. I've been on 85 for a very long time, but only to prevent CRT related headaches.

Pixel response is a non issue as well. All modern panels are perfectly fine for gaming, TN, IPS or VA. Hell, my primary screen is a 2013 AMVA and I have zero complaint - IPS panels are even better in terms of pixel response.

I understand some people are really hooked on high refresh rates though. I really don't understand why they're willing to sacrifice color reproduction for a slightly smoother experience, but there you have it. Your best bet is trying out high refresh rates in real life and deciding for yourself if that's something that's really, really important to you.

My sentiments exactly.

I have had them all, including 120Hz and strobing monitors. Yes they are very, very good for gaming but the smoothness is more of a luxury than a requirement. Input lag is another story though...

The Asus seems to get a lot of mediocre reviews, and has PWM. I'd get the Eizo EV2336 if you don't need the things it's missing (HDMI, sound etc). If you do need those things there's the Eizo FS 2333.

I don't know if Asus ever fixed this, but the PA248Q is somewhat known for randomly flickering out for 1-2 seconds. I had this model for a couple of days and had to send it back for this very reason. Check out the reviews on Amazon and Newegg for more details.

Edit: Some folks are sensitive to PWM flickering, but this flickering - the type I'm referring to - actually causes the screen to black out for a couple of seconds.

I've been using my PA248q for over a year and absolutely loved it. Apparently I'm not susceptible to PWM flicker so I lucked out there but gaming on that is pretty damn good in my eyes (subjective lol)

Far Cry 3 is a beauty with the IPS colors :p

Though, today I received the PB278q and my 248 will be gifted down to my fiance.
