Please tell me that the amount of this fine was just a weird coincidence.

"Through the email correspondence between Apple and these three telecom companies we discovered the companies submit their pricing plans to Apple to be approved or confirmed before the products hit the market," the commission said in a statement, according to the WSJ. The newspaper could not reach Apple for comment.

More proof Jobs was the devil.
They should've added three more zeros, Apple would just reach into their pocket for that amount.

They fined them $20,000,000 Taiwan Dollars, so the fact that its $666,000 USD didn't probably enter their thoughts

This is bullshit. Companies do this all over the world. It's called Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) It's what prevents giant retailers like Amazon from buying huge stocks of Apple products and selling them for next to no margin because they can afford to take a lower margin. It's a race to the bottom otherwise. All of the small retailers would go out of business. If this practice is not allowed than many retailers would refuse to carry the product. TV companies like Panasonic require this for their TVs.

Even if it's legal - is it better to spend 10x as much (or more) on lawsuits to have it overturned just to continue the practice and keep it legal in that country or just pay the small fine and move on and continue?

Sometimes, I can see spending more just to keep the practice available to them (more money in the long run) than it is to pay a stupid small fine and have that option removed.

Apple is all about marketing. Don't see anything special about owing an Apple

Simplicity, stability and security of the iOS. iPad & iPhone are fast, capable, have a vast library of applications. It's a pretty closed OS, so unless you jailbreak it, you're putting on tested applications direct from the Apple store.

Similar to the Windows Phone 7/8 models. Closed OS, apps available by official means only, stable and fast. Just a lack of applications is it's weakness (but it's improving all the time).

Android, while it kicks some major ass and I love it, is way more open and applications can come from unofficial sources, can be a bit less stable (even with vanilla ROM's from the carrier). Tons of applications, as well.

So, Apple has it's place for many people.
