Ten years ago today Kyle offered up his thoughts on the future of consoles in this post. Damn I love that 10 Years Ago Today button! :)

Is this really the future of consoles? I think the "feature war" may come to the consoles just like it did to mainboards and end up being the norm rather than the exception. Also once consumers accept that the box is a throw away item after 2 to 3 years, I think the convergence will be better accepted also. But once again, our readers knew that already. Anyway, Sony is out in front on this. I'll stop rambling now...

Bummer it didn't become a 2-3 and replace item. I think we'd be farther along graphically/features/AI if they were on that timescale.
 
I remember all the "next gen consoles will do all games at 1080p and 60fps and look awesome, to expect anything less at this point is ridiculous!", or the "since the next consoles are going to do 4k, maybe the XBOX 4000 and PS4K is what they'll be called!". Unfortunately reality didn't live up to the hopes and dreams :p

Actually anything less than 1080p 60fps is ridiculous, and these new gen consoles are ridiculously underpowered. If we're going to be doing 720p again, then I don't see the point in a new console

Quit your whining and think WWSD - what would Saddam do. Buy a shitload of PS4's, attempt to link them together to create a super computer that will take over the world. It almost worked with PS2's, you have 13 years on your side!!
 
I can honestly say the is the first time I had money for a console on launch and the first time I didn't want one. The just seems to be less and less games I've really enjoyed on consoles the last few years and I'm sick of the gimmicks and dumb downs.

I don't care about voice, touch or motion. I'm tired of Quicktime sequences, checkpoints and floating icons above enemies. Years ago we had fantastic mechanics and garbage graphics. Now its the opposite. Just give me HD releases of old SNES, Genesis, GBA and Arcade games and I'll be happy as hell to shut up and hand over my money.

Your post reminds me of the movie back to the future part 2. In 2015 we're suppose to have automatic lace up Nike's and hover boards, but I don't see that being developed in the next year.
 
So, what isn't true about that statement that wasn't true even ten years before that?

i'm in a similar boat. This is the first time since the NES that i haven't bought the new consoles on release. And its not due to the software (i'm i actually very impressed with how the Double Helix guys have done with Killer Instinct!! if only other developers put that much effort into creating). Its due to the hardware and how much of a baby step sideways that it is not only power wise... but also in Operating System functionality wise.

If i can' tput a memory stick in and play my 1080p60 video's or .flac files, at will - or backup my game saves/replays etc to said external drive. They can DIAF. I'm absolutely sick to death of being so limited from doing such simple it-should-just-do-it things! It is so painful and limiting and i'm fed up with the lack of depth in devices that should have been more feature rich then PC's given their locked down hardware and the ability this gives developers to go to town on... development. *sigh*

I think this console war is more of a "who sucks the least" kind of thing, instead of "who's the most awesome."

Do you guys remember that CGI promo for Killzone? Console crowd ate that shit like there was no tomorrow. They insisted to no end that it was real :D

The game ended up looking like crap but that's just history.

I can make 1080p 60fps with my tablet no problem. Doesn't mean the graphics are any good. ;)
 
Many years ago I gave consoles as we know them only 2-3 gens left after seeing how they were starting to want to be PCs. Even this first of my predicted 2-3 gens shows another major shift in architecture and philosophy. With that shiftt, PC won't have to do anything as consoles are assimilating themselves. It will be a great day for gamers when we end up with a single, better platform without that exclusivity BS consoles cling to to sell.
