Bought a used HP Elitebook laptop from corporate lease seller on Ebay. Attempt to put a Intel Core2 Q9000, a quad processor. Got it pretty cheap, and upgrades cost me $153. Cannot find a new Intel Core2 Q9000 new at a good price so bought used processor. Works!

The good thing about this upgrade everything is accessible without total disassembly. Memory and hard drive is simple panel, easy. The processor is under the keyboard, removal was a little hard, not much, only thing is the cooling fan was stubborn.

BIOS saw the processor without bios update. Temps are running around 65 deg C. It does have discrete video card 109-b37631-00f, it runs around 62 deg C.

Youtube.com video on disassembly but only watched to see key screws and tabs to remove.

The elitebook series do have a few more options usually, the best CPU I think is the QX9300 which you can overclock but it can still be expensive.

I ran an Acer aspire 7738G which shipped with a Q9000 and I put in a Q9200 (unlocked) ran it at 3.06ghz and had an HD7770M in it (925/1500 clocks), replaced the panel with a 1080p one (instead of 1600x900), 8GB of DDR3, 128GB SSD, 500GB HDD.

Some of these old machines can really be given legs.

Yes I saw the QX9300 but like you said, was out of my price range. This laptop is going to my brother as a gift for excellent work around moms house. Wasn't looking for max hardware operation, since this is a gift I chose in cost and functionality, and longer term use of the laptop.

The first "I core" processor were dual core so laptop options are limited per cost basis. The Core2 options were better cost effective choice and also easier to get on Ebay.

New battery, new hard drive, new power brick and new memory. Total cost after upgrades was $260. Better than AMD quad, Intel dual cores and better than i3, i5 and i7 dual cores. Careful choice on Ebay is important so I buy strictly from good hardware resellers with some warranty and really good pictures of the item.

This is just a hobby for me. Fun stuff!!

Do you recall which processor was in your machine before you switched to the quad core? I bought a QX9300 to replace my X9100 but the machine boots up and shuts down immediately. I read there are different mainboards for the dual/quad core versions of the 8530w but I cant find a single 8530w on eBay or anywhere else that comes with a quad core.

Im also looking into the 8730w but I cant find a single one that comes with a quad core processor anywhere! Starting to get frustrated - can anyone lead me in the direction of a quad core machine?
