R9 290x black screen

I had the same problem and was getting frustrated. I saw that someone posted to underclick the ram a little and they were able to play. So I set my ram to 1100 and left the core at 947 using the MSI AB and I was able to play BF4 for a couple hours. Prior to that the most I was able to play was literally 2 minutes.

I know it sucks to have to under clock your card but it's a fix until AMD gets their shit together.

That just sucks getting a new card and dealing with BS like this. :(
I'm glad I hit the cancel button at the last second,-Abort!- New hardware failure alert!-lol
I'll wait till they have a better cooler solution. :)
I had such high hopes for AMD this time around :(
Never buy 1st gen stuff,- been burned before-never again!
Good luck :)

Well, I've determined for sure my cards are going back. I figured I would play some Far Cry 3, see how the new cards did with a more demanding game. It was abysmal. First I tried playing how the game was set up when I had a single Titan, my frame rates were in the 40's with terrible stutter. So I put everything on low and switched to DX9 mode, 70-80fps is all they could muster up. My GTX 580 can do 70-80 fps on medium settings in DX9... seriously something is not right with these cards. Oh, and I forgot to mention the frequent white flashes and artifacts. Back to newegg they go, I don't think I will by replacing them with more 290's. I gave it a shot, but I don't spend $900 on GPU's to deal with this kind of crap. I'm not that interested in what mantle might bring later on down the road.

I've been for almost 24 hours with my brand new replacement from RMA, which suffers the same black screens, and couldn't even use my computer for browsing or watching movies.

I uninstalled AMD drivers and it's been fine all day long... So I hope they do fix this with drivers.

Guys .. I have had no black screen issues with my 290 as it's been about 2 weeks now since i got it and I'm running x58 with 13.11v9.2 driver on window 8.1 and it plays BF 4 without issues..

I'm sure there is an answer that must of you may have in common like window 7 or the newer chipsets maybe.. I don't know but some of us don't have the issue and I don't think AMD is the total blame..

I have had black screens consistently with three entirely different hardware setups under both Windows 7, Windows 8, and Window 8.1. AMD has acknowledged that there is an issue, that AMD rep Warsam said they will be releasing a driver to "fix" it but its been pushed back already one time. I think it is specific to some cards and not others rather than the hardware setup.

Well my card is the Sapphire R9 290 with Elpdia ram to rule out the card.

Sapphire..never again. Like, ever. Next time I'll get an MSI or XFX.

People really...read what's being said, this has nothing to do with Sapphire, Asus or whatever other brand using AMD chips.
This is an AMD problem, and they confirmed it's a driver issue. It seems it's a driver in combination with certain batches of the 290 chips though, but still it's a problem that should be fixed by AMD soon.

So blaming Sapphire for something they have nothing to do with is pointless.
Same goes for saying "NO MORE AMD EVER Herp Derp", this is a brand spanking new chip, there's bound to be some problems, it's not like NVIDIA never has any problems when releasing new cards.
Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't.

The new beta says "May resolve intermittent black screens or display loss observed on some AMD Radeon™ R9 290X and AMD Radeon R9 290 graphics cards" :-\

Hello everyone,

AMD has been aware of the reports and been investigating on the issue which resulted in the release of a new driver, which we have just released, here is the link: http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/latest-catalyst-windows-beta.aspx

Please make sure to read the Features Highlights as it provides more details about the driver.

And if you are still experiencing an issue after the installation, please use our AMD Issue Reporting Form for the Catalyst driver, found here: http://www.amdsurveys.com/se.ashx?s=5A1E27D25AD12B3D

Thank you very much for your patience.

New drivers and still getting black screens...I'm done dicking around with this. I didnt pay $400 for aggrevation. I'm returning this POS card and Back to NVIDIA I go.

7870/7850's were getting black screens of death last year and that's why I ditched mine, I see the trend is now continuing with the 290's. Dammit, I don't want to get another nVidia card.

It puzzle's me for sure.. how many of you reset your cmos before installing the card as I have seen that fix many video card issues.

DirectX 11.2 - Tier 1 Tiled Resources now supported on the following products:

is this an automatic feature or does it need to be programmed into the game

Thanks for the new drivers. I'll report back if I still experience the issue.

So poop I didn't really have this issue. Download the new beta, now boom it happens :/

So far i'm only hearing negative things about the new driver, I'm going to try it tonight and report back tomorrow.

I have not had any black screens with the games I've played so far. Is it just mainly one game or any game?

I was having black screens on my Powercolor r9 290(non x) till i did a driver reinstall + sweep. in safe mode driver sweeper found my old 7900 still in the guts of windows. Black screen freezes are gone now, but i have major issues with studdering.

Gpu clocks itself to ~ 500 mhz fluctuating all over, memory shows spikes down to 150 mhz and it no where near 95c when it starts doing this crap, i alt tab out, then back in and its butter smooth again for abotu 10 or so min. has happened on overlord @ 1080p and also ys origin @ 1080p. tried vsync on and off, frame limiter to 59 on radeon pro... nothing makes a diff. its terribad :(

got ff14 working but instant black screen if I turn on the HDR,setting, so cure for ff14 = no high def rendering. sad face -.-

Issue is completely fixed for me with the BETA released on Friday night, very happy that I can finally enjoy this card.

Just to point it out, HDR means High Dynamic Range, no high definition rendering. It improves the contrast between dark scenes and bright lighting, and as such games can still look extremely good without it.

Sigh I'm sorry :( I have no idea why you guys are getting black screens. I tried FF14/HDR/borderless and windowed, and no blackscreens after letting it loop for an hour..

Can you check your +12v reading in GPU-Z to see if its 11.75v or higher at idle and no lower than 11.50-11.62v at load? (btw I have Hynix)

I've yet to install the new drivers. I've been just doing light gaming on my 5870 in the mean while. I'll probably switch it back out for the 290x later tonight and install the new drivers.

I'll report back of anything new. I'll also try the turning off HDR for FFXIV

No black screens--so far, at least--with my 290X and the 13.11b9.4 drivers. The Overdrive section is indeed missing entirely (clean install), though at this point I can more than live without it.

Was getting black crashes all day yesterday. Sound would continue just fine. Resetting with the restart button wouldn't work - my sound would make atrocious popping noises until I hard reset by holding the power button.

New drivers = Skyrim all night, ENB, everything maxed out etc.

I SEEM to have a bit lower performance with the beta drivers, but I'm not sure if that's simply placebo.

It is 11.75v at idle, had a random black screen with ~HDR~ off today, so I broke down and set the temp for 90 thinking it maybe that, going to try the newer beta drivers and the hdr tonight with the lower temp settings.

Same problem here with overdrive missing.

Just received my RMA 290x from Newegg. So far so good :) haven't had any blackscreen freeze ups. I've installed the latest beta driver (9.4). I did notice my benchmark scores go down a bit, however.
I'm having a similar problem with the new driver though, when I go into the performance/amd overdrive area of CCC, I cannot enable Graphics OverDrive. I can check it off and make changes but when I click apply it doesn't work.
Just wanted to unlock my fan speed to 100%, not trying to overclock or anything.
Does anyone have any ideas? I've resorted to creating a fan profile in msi afterburner in the meantime.

seems 9.4 might be missing a few things.
you could try 9.2 catalyst.

unfortunately unlocking the fan does stop the card form throttling.

I had to crate a fan profile in AB regardless.

So what did AMD's new beta driver do exactly to help alleviate the black screens? I read on OCN that it bumped up the RAM voltage, but I would like to know if that is accurate, If that is the case, it still looks like more of a hardware defect and this was a quick fix for some people that were boarderline unstable on the previous voltage. Since installing the beta drivers I have not had a black screen issue and I really hope I do not have any future black screens. I have unlocked my 290 to a 290x and would really like to keep that instead of RMAing and getting a locked 290 back.

It seems like it definitely bumped the RAM voltage up, my cards were able to get an extra 50mhz on the memory now. I have not had a black screen since the new beta drivers came out, but I do still have white flashes in CF. Right now I'm using just one card and the experience is much, much better than two was.
