Upgrade from 6970 CF to R9 280x CF?

Just wondering if this upgrade would be worth it performance wise.

You will see a ~30% improvement before O/C'ing, just as you would have seen from going to 7970Ghz X-Fire..These cards OC like crazy though, especially if WC'd, so you can see greater then the 30% rather easily.

only thing worth waiting for is 20nm

That's helpful:rolleyes:...An R9280X setup will net him ~30-50% MORE performance, depending on the game and O/C'ing, and a 780/R9 290/X will clearly off much more then that..

20nm will NOT be ready to ship in volumes until June at the earliest, and I will bet $100 that it will be early Fall before you see either Team ship any 20nm enthusiast parts due to TSMC's usual yield issues...

Waiting is waiting. If you absolutely can't wait there are better cards out there. If you can wait a bit, say until new games that are more demanding come out, you can save $$$
(my point was, if the upgrade is not now the next thing is most likely 20nm)

It's not like your games are running slower with your current cards. If you just want to have the latest and greatest, then by all means.

where did you get that ridiculous 30% improvement number. a single HD 7970 Ghz(1050 mhz) and HD 7950(1125 mhz) are equal in performance and both are faster than HD 6970 CF.

1920 x 1080

HD 7850 - 56
HD 6970 - 60
ASUS R9 280X - 100

thats a 66.6% faster card at stock. SLI scaling on average across many games is 1.5 - 1.6x. remember the HD 6970 has only 100 - 125 mhz max OC headroom while HD 7970 Ghz / R9 280X has 200 - 250 mhz max OC headroom. but the most important thing is the 65% improvement is an avg which includes DX9 games. In the latest DX11 games like BF4, Metro Last Light, Crysis 3, Tombraider a HD 7970 Ghz / R9 280X destroys a HD 6970 and is 2x - 2.5x the perf of HD 6970.

anybody who is running a HD 6970 CF / HD 6950 CF is best served by going to a HD 7950 OC / HD 7950 boost if you can find one for USD 200 - 220. those crazy prices are now tough to find. looks like HD 7950 stocks are drying up. alternatively you could get a R9 280X at USD 300.

I have done upgrade from 6970 CF to 7970GHz CF. I am very satisfied. It is same upgrade so you might be satisfied to. Well if you find better deal on 7970GHz go for it as I have done. Same card as R9 280X.

Already for longer time I miss GPU horsepower. I have had two water cooled 6970's to power my 30” Dell 3008 WFP.

Although it might sound crazy for some people I have recently upgraded my 6970 X-fire to 7970GHz X-fire.
Originally I wanted to go back to Green Club but could not make myself do it.

Why did I go to Ati again? Price to performance.

Why not R9 280X? Same card and costs more here. Simple.

Well I took Club3D cards. I have paid them like 498 Euro but got six free games with it. BTW here in Europe GTX 780 costs like 599 Euro. So saved 100 Euro comparing to it and got way more GPU Power. Way more than Titan actually.

Now back to OP. Well difference is huge. Do not go by numbers or benchmarks. Difference is being able to play all games with all eye candy or not.

BTW those Club3D cards are flimsy and cooler is noisy (water blocks still not in). On other hand 1100 Mhz GPU and 6 GHz on memory stock. With water blocks I expect them to run great.

Now it is like you have started a fire in your case. My Soundblaster ZXR is right on the top of them and it gets way to hot. Actually case has to be open to be able to game with crossfire set-up.

So two R9 280x will do just a same as 7970GHz. And difference to 6970 CF is huge.

On other hand if you do 3D Mark you will be exposed to strange conclusion. First two tests will be almost at same speed. Third test will be way faster. Well only third test really shows horse powers of your complete system.
So do not get disappointed in first two results. Try games and enjoy it. I do. Kinda while I hate to play it without WC solution.

I think you should wait until the 290 is released at least. I plan to get the 290. Maybe the 290x if the price and performance increase is worth it over the the 290. I'll be coming from two 5850's in crossfire, so it can't come soon enough!

becuase the r9 280x just came out....

The 280X is a 7970GE. The 7970 was launched in Jan 2012 and all of them could overclock to 1GHz or better.

Also the 7970 has been at or below the 280X price point for over a year now, so...
