I've got an 850 watt PSU laying around brand new in the box.

However, I seem to recall hearing that I need more to get my 4P AMD running. I don't recall the specs, but it has the 16-core CPUs.

Any quick advice for me? Thanks.

16 core "extra spicy" - you probably need more PSU to maximize output
16 core retail - 850 should be fine

850W is actually fine for extra spicies if you didn't get carried away overclocking.

Bottom line - BUY THE 4P!!!!! The 850W PSU will at least get you running and probably will be enough for the long-term.

Yes, I have a spicy version of the chips. I try not to get carried away in my OC'ing. Thanks for the advice.

I've been looking at the sales for a 1200 watt PSU, but I have come up short.

Should be fine unless you venture beyond 2.8 GHz, methinks.

wtf...? and here I thought you were [H]...

I can't afford to fail. Burning things makes me cry.

I decided to play it safe(r) with my G34. Running the chips at 3.4GHz is fine with me. When I ran them at higher clock, I smoked the VRMs on one of the CPU sockets and was down for about two months.

I had a Thermaltake Toughpower XT 875W Power Supply in my 4p for about 6 months till I got scared.

FWIW:

My 4P is SM H8QGL-iF+ 4x 6176SE @ 230 32G RAM lots of fans with XFX 850W drawing 760W at the wall. This PSU has been running 24/7/365 since Dec 2011.

OCZ 850 watt ZX series
rated at 80% efficiency.

14% 1 star reviews on the egg =/ I wouldn't do it

I'd get a seasonic or a corsair for a 4p, you want clean power for a clean operation

Used to have Corsair TX-850M on 6172@240, ran fine for about 9-10months then it started to degrade.. System is NOT stable at 240, so had to push down to 235 ... and 230.... Still getting reboot once in awhile.

Replace it with PC P&C 950w, it is now back to 240 for last 2 weeks. Hope this one last "forever" :D

What do you suggest for size? How many watts is enough?

I do plan to OC this beast.

That 850W unit is a good unit. The only problem is it's price, but since you already have it no point in buying something else. It will provide all 850W as advertised.
