I've got say... $500 to work with.

I currently have a zotac superclocked 580 gtx with 3gb memory

I want to upgrade

would a 2gb 770 gtx be worth $400 as an upgrade?

for $450 I an get a 7970 ghz edition 3gb

I'm reading benchmarks and they look very similar, but the numbers definitely look better on the 7970 ghz

I always go back and forth on video card brands. I go for best performance I can get within the budget that I've allotted. So...which one should I get? Any links to benchmarks to prove one is better than the other?

Depends on you i would say. How happy are you with what you got? What kind of jump are you expecting?

If you're trying to squeeze as much life as you can out of a video card you might as well get the GTX 780. Just save a little bit more for next month and get it :) But there is also DX 11.2 card coming out next year :/ decisions!

what does 11.2 really offer... most don't even use 11 still.

the jump to 750 from 400 is a big one and I'm not willing to spend that high... $500 was my limit for the 580 and 500 will be my limit for this one. the 770 is 2 gens ahead of the 580 which is usually when i buy, every other gen... I know it's a retooled 680 but it's still the best I can afford I think and it should give me a nice jump from the 580

I play planetside and I heard nvidia is better for that game, but I don't play favorites. I'm also liking that the 770 is $100 less. I believe the performance is dead even on the cards if I'm not mistaken, if not a slight edge to the nvidia for adaptive vsync or whatever they call it, phys x support, and the fact that most games are made with nvidia in mind...

if you had to choose between those two cards, what would you choose and why?

In that case I'd wait. The 780 is the $500 card of this generation. Problem is amd has nothing to combat it. Wait till amd releases something and get a 780 when price drops. Your selling yourself short with a 770. Its not 2 gens ahead. Its a good binned 680 basically which means its 1 gen ahead. Anything under a 780 isn't worth the $. Even a 780 should be a 770 and the titan should be the 780. I think its so stupid the 770 has 256 bit 2gb and 780 has 384 bit 3gb. Makes no sense with any previous nvidia gens. Amd fault for releasing weak gpu and causing nvidia to sit on their fast gpus and release their mid range as their high end (670,680). Unless u get $300 for your 580 and only spend $100 out of pocket. PS 780 is 650 not 750. O and with inflation in 10 years $500 will b like a mid range OK card lol.

Sell the GTX 580, buy the GTX 780 if you want the best for under $1K, Lol. If you want to go budget, pocket some cash, get the HD7970.

If something new comes out, well, you can sell whichever card you decide on. You might take a little loss, but hey, you're getting better performance right away vs waiting for whenever.

I would choose the Asus, just because they have a better rep then Gigabyte.

All in all the only brands I really buy are OEM brands, and Asus.

Sapphire HD 7970 OC(1 Ghz) sells for USD 377 after $15 off AT-H7970CB w/code: IRENA2815(ends 07/15/2013)

the average overclocks are 1150 mhz and should trade blows with a GTX 770 OC (1250 Mhz).

MSI HD 7970 Lightning BE (1150 mhz) is the fastest clocked HD 7970 Ghz out of the box.

Both these cards come with 4 games. make sure amazon has the game bundle if you buy ASUS HD 7970 MATRIX PLATINUM

Just because the picture shows 4 games doesn't mean it does. Seen a lot of people making this mistake lately and not getting game vouchers.

the OP can call and confirm that the game vouchers will be given with the card. superbiiz and tigerdirect are still posting it on the product page. newegg has stopped listing the game bundle with the cards. looks like they are out of game coupons.

I do everything through steam and could care less about game bundles, that won't influence my decision. I decided I will try to step up to the 780 if I can... but i dunno if I want to drop that kind of money. we'll see.

A 780 has 3gb of memory and is faster than both of them... dunno if I wanna drop that kind of loot tho.
